Energie Cottbus: New squad planner reveals scouting secrets!

Planning at Energie Cottbus is in full swing! Maniyel Nergiz, who has only been working as a squad planner for the third division club since the beginning of the year, has brought a breath of fresh air into the scouting strategies. In an interview with Day24 the 42-year-old explains how he finds players for the coming season.

Nergiz, married and proud father of two children, previously gained experience as an assistant coach and analyst at various clubs, including Verl, Paderborn, Ingolstadt and Osnabrück. His everyday work is divided into three phases: First, a data-based pre-selection is made, followed by video scouting and finally the crucial live scouting. “Live scouting is the most important phase for us,” emphasizes Nergiz. The aim is to be present at games at least three times a week to get an idea of potential new signings.

The focus areas of the scouting system

Regional leagues are very important for Cottbus. Nergiz has already watched all regional leagues as well as many games in the 3rd league. He notes that the differences in the level of the regional leagues are often exaggerated; the Bavarian and North Regionalliga in particular tends to perform weaker. “The focus is clearly on regional talent in order to promote family closeness,” he explains. An outlook for foreign markets such as Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland and Holland is conceivable, but this will not be included in the planning in the short term.

Current transfers and challenges

While Nergiz is pushing ahead with the search for players, the club is also looking at the current challenges in the transfer market. How Transfer market reported, there are currently neither arrivals nor departures. Transfers are blocked in this phase and the situation of players like Silas and Vagnoman is difficult. Injuries to other players such as Perea, Chase, Faghir and Stenzel further limit the options for substitution.

Energie Cottbus now has the goal of making the leap into international leagues next year, ideally into the Europa Conference League or the Europa League. “We expect that the hot phase for transfers will begin at the end of July,” says Nergiz. There are open construction sites in the defensive midfield and in the attack, where reinforcements are needed.

The search for new talent and possible transfers remains exciting, and the coming weeks could be crucial for the future of Energie Cottbus. Until then, it remains to be seen which players will be recommended and whether the squad planning is heading in the right direction.
