Water withdrawal is prohibited all day in Cottbus from tomorrow!

From tomorrow onwards in Cottbus the motto will finally be “save water!” From June 27, 2025, all-day abstraction of water from surface water using pumps will be strictly prohibited throughout the city. This measure, published online today, is a direct response to the current low water situation that is severely affecting the city and the region. The outflow of the Spree at the Leibsch gauge has been noticeably below the critical minimum value of 4.5 m³/s since June 1st. This shows how urgent the situation is. The city is following the example of surrounding districts and taking timely measures to conserve water resources. In addition, the previous general order on the temporary ban on withdrawals was repealed in order to clarify the new regulations, reported Niederlausitz-current.

As the city of Cottbus itself reports, this order is a response to the ongoing drought and falling water levels in the Spree. The forecasts indicate that hot and dry weather conditions will continue. “We ask all Cottbus residents to actively help save water,” appeals the city. The regulations affect both private water withdrawals and approved withdrawals by companies. If savings potential is suspected, these checks and, if necessary, restrictions or stops in the water supply can result, explained radiocottbus.de.

Water balance in view

The tense situation does not only affect Cottbus. In other regions of Germany, too, awareness of the need for a sustainable water balance is increasing. In Bavaria, for example, climate projections show that summers will be characterized by more drought and low water levels in the future. The State Office for the Environment has already taken measures to stabilize the water balance. It is clear: climate change is not an unattainable phenomenon, but rather urges us to act, emphasizes lfu.bayern.de.

The current events in Cottbus must also make us think in other regions. Periods of drought, which in the past were often considered an exception, are increasingly becoming the rule. Constructive cooperation between all water users is essential in order to use this valuable food fairly. People are called upon to actively participate in low water management. The city of Cottbus also offers further information about the Lower Water Authority and calls on people to approach the situation responsibly.
