Two cyclists injured in accidents in Cottbus – safety required!
In Cottbus, the topic of road safety for cyclists remains a sad and current point of discussion. Last Thursday evening, two traffic accidents occurred in which cyclists were injured. Loud Niederlausitz Current The first incident occurred at around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Hardenbergstrasse and Gaglower Strasse. A 69-year-old cyclist was overlooked by a BMW driver, which was apparently due to the low sun. Fortunately, the woman did not require medical treatment at the scene, but her bike was no longer rideable after the impact.
About an hour later, around 7:15 p.m., the second accident occurred on Madlower Hauptstrasse. Here a driver overlooked a 38-year-old cyclist while turning. He was injured and then taken to hospital. The material damage amounts to around 2,500 euros for the vehicles involved.
But that's not all - Cottbus also has to contend with other dark underbelly. A senior citizen became the victim of a brazen theft while shopping in a supermarket on Georg-Schlesinger-Straße.
Tragic accident under similar circumstances
Sadly, the accident that occurred on Tuesday morning at the intersection of Dresdener Strasse and Ottilienstrasse is not the first of its kind in Cottbus. Loud rbb24 An 87-year-old cyclist died from injuries sustained in a similar incident. The challenges for cyclists
The situation of cyclists in Germany is worrying. The Time reports that the number of cyclist accidents has risen sharply in recent years. In 2022, 474 cyclists died and around 98,000 suffered injuries - an increase of almost 40 percent compared to 2013. Caution is particularly important at intersections, where 60 percent of accidents occur with cyclists. The most common cause of accidents is careless drivers, especially when turning right.
Cyclists are often the ones who suffer, which is why it's time to promote safety on the roads. Political measures could include changes to the StVO, which include, among other things, improving sight lines at intersections and color-coded cycle paths. The demand for a speed limit of 30 km/h in urban areas is also an approach to avoid such tragedies in the future.
Police continue to provide local citizens with tips on how to avoid theft, which are relevant to shoppers and cyclists alike. This includes always storing wallets and bags in closed inner pockets and keeping amounts of money to a minimum.
The events of the last few days conjure up a dark picture that affects us all. It remains to be hoped that both political responsibility and individual behavior will contribute to making the streets in Cottbus safer.
