Wernsdorf fire department: Cities increase budget for new watchtower by 2 million!

In a groundbreaking decision, the city council of Königs Wusterhausen unanimously approved the construction of a new fire department in Wernsdorf. This measure, which is necessary due to the inadequate conditions of the existing tool shed, which is over 120 years old, is intended to significantly improve the safety and efficiency of the emergency services. However, the planned total costs have increased from the original 4.63 million euros to around 6.65 million euros, which led the city council to plan the additional costs incurred in the budget, reports maz-online.de.

The new station is not expected to be completed before 2027 as construction work has not yet started due to a delayed B-plan process. Completion was originally scheduled to take place at the beginning of 2025. The current location of the equipment shed is far too small and dilapidated and therefore poses considerable risks, particularly with regard to the safety of the firefighters.

Need for a new building

The old location is no longer viable. According to a comprehensive analysis, there is a significant investment backlog in fire stations across Germany, amounting to around 16.3 billion euros. On many fire stations, which often date from the 60s and 70s, the requirements for safety and functionality are no longer met, as is the platform answering.de explained. To ensure that emergency services can work under safe conditions, new buildings and extensive renovations are increasingly necessary.

The Wernsdorf local fire brigade leader, Marcel Schust, is pleased about the support of the city council and sees a realistic target for the completion of the new building in 2027. Safety in the fire station is of central importance, as the fire department is responsible for protecting the health of the emergency services. Alarm cases bring with them particular dangers that must be minimized through suitable structural measures.

In order to continue to meet the requirements in the future, the fire departments also need space for the most modern equipment. The new building in Wernsdorf could prove to be a decisive step in optimizing operational readiness and thus strengthen the safety of citizens in the long term through more professional operations.

An exemplary example

At the same time, the construction of a new fire station was successfully planned in other communities, such as Amlingstadt. This initiative shows that it is possible to implement a timely and cost-effective project through strategic planning and participation from other departments. This new equipment shed in Amlingstadt will not only offer modern changing rooms and storage rooms, but will also integrate training rooms and a PV system for energy supply. In total, the costs amount to around 1.1 million euros, although funding from the Free State of Bavaria could provide some relief, as reported on wittich.de clarified.

These developments clearly show that the future of fire stations lies in overall strategic planning and a future-oriented approach. The safety of emergency personnel and the appropriate equipment must always be a priority.
