New high school in Wustermark: District council invests 60 million euros!

An important decision has been made in the Havelland district: At a special meeting, the district council voted to invest around 60 million euros in the construction of a new four-class high school in Wustermark. This measure is intended to respond to the increasing number of students in Osthavelland, because the need for a secondary school is becoming more and more urgent. The new high school will offer the opportunity to take the Abitur and thus significantly improve the educational opportunities of local young people.

The district council members interrupted their summer break to give the district administrator an authorization to advance the rapid planning of the project. This step avoids the need for a new vote by MPs for every decision. The necessary building rights must now be created at the planned location in Wustermark, near the future bypass road and the “Otto Lilienthal” elementary school. The “Neue Bahnhofstrasse” development plan provides for a maximum of two full floors, combined with traffic-calmed zones, footpaths and cycle paths and public green spaces.

A new educational offer for the region

There is also news in Premnitz: The high school will be converted into a comprehensive school and will have three classes from the new school year. This project will be completed a year later and aims to further expand the educational offerings. The district also plans to invest around five million euros in the expansion of the Spektrum school in Rathenow, which functions as a special needs school. Construction work is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026. The Pestalozzi special school in Rathenow is also undergoing significant investment.

The decision to reopen the “Am Akazienhof” special school in Falkensee was controversial and shows the different views of the district council members. While some are calling for more space for inclusive teaching, the district administration points out the urgency of providing special school places. The district council will meet again on October 13, 2025 to discuss further steps.

Sustainable development in Wustermark

But there are not only developments in the education sector. The train station in Wustermark will play a significant role as a central transfer station in the reconstruction of the Hamburg railway line. The new high school is being built here, and there are also plans to build a bicycle garage and improve pedestrian and bicycle traffic in the region. The selection of the first trees and bushes for this purpose has already been decided by the local council.

Discussions about sustainable transport development have gotten rolling, supported by tests of mobile stations that are being carried out together with regional partners in Wustermark. “There’s something going on,” you could say, because the community shows a good hand in implementing these important projects. Citizens' interest was strengthened through participation formats, such as the playground project in Priort, where everyone can actively participate.

In conclusion, investments in education and infrastructure in Havelland County will have far-reaching and positive impacts on the community. While the planning is progressing, it is already clear that the region is well on its way to successfully mastering the challenges of the future.
