Lebenshilfe opens doors: insights and actions in Brandenburg!
On Wednesday, the Lebenshilfe workshop in Brandenburg an der Havel opened its doors to all interested visitors. On the occasion of the “Open Day” guests were able to gain exciting insights into the working world of people with disabilities. Mayor Steffen Scheller insisted on visiting this special event in person.
From 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., four locations in the city presented their services and products. The main workshop at Potsdamer Landstrasse 11 offered a variety of insights into the carpentry, metal workshop and assembly departments. Visitors were also able to explore the drinks market at Am Gallberg 1A and get first-hand information about the online bookstore “Schmökerhöker” at Warschauer Straße 11. Every day the employees work full of enthusiasm to create products of selected quality.
A variety of hands-on activities and products
A special highlight were the hands-on activities in which the guests could become active themselves. In the branch workshop on Wredowstrasse, various training courses were offered, such as textile finishing. Here the visitors themselves designed cushions, stools, yoga mats and eye pillows. Lebenshilfe's recipes for success include not only creative own products, but also collaboration with a forklift company to pack oil blankets and the creation of labels for special editions from well-known beverage manufacturers. Steffen Scheller personally helped decorate a blue Lebenshilfe T-shirt and showed how participation works.
This day was a celebration of inclusion and participation. Lebenshilfe Brandenburg – Potsdam e.V. is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, while the Lebenshilfe workshop can look back on 30 years of successful work. It becomes clear that Lebenshilfe is not just a term, but a movement that promotes togetherness in Brandenburg an der Havel.
Challenges of accessibility
However, a central issue remains accessibility, which often represents a challenge for many people with disabilities in everyday life. As Lebenshilfe reports, barrier-free offers in local public transport (ÖPNV) and on-demand offers are essential for self-determined mobility. Although it was legally stipulated that public transport should be barrier-free by January 1, 2022, the targets have not yet been implemented across the board.
The Basic Law makes it clear in Article 3 that no one may be disadvantaged because of their disability. It is an essential goal to compensate for disadvantages and ensure the participation of all people. The course for an inclusive society has been set, but there is still a lot of work ahead of us.
The “Open Day” was a successful step to draw attention to the abilities and talents of people with disabilities and to further promote integration into our society.
