Brandenburg in its sights: Police uncover speeding sprees!
In the period from August 4th to 10th, 2025, the East Police Department carried out a large-scale operation as part of the Europe-wide traffic operation “ROADPOL”. The focus of this initiative was clearly on combating speeding, which remains a major cause of serious road accidents. Overall, numerous road users were checked in the Oder-Spree, Märkisch-Oderland, Barnim and Uckermark districts as well as in the city of Frankfurt (Oder). The checks focused primarily on avenues and popular routes for motorized two-wheelers, where high-speed driving is often observed. According to Bernau Live, the officers had a lot to do: of 24,691 vehicles checked, 1,532 did not adhere to the prescribed speed.
The police are pursuing a clear goal with their measures: they not only want to punish traffic violations, but also have a preventative effect. In addition to the speed checks, technical safety checks of the vehicles were also carried out. This comprehensive control is part of the strategy to ensure road safety. “We are taking aggressive measures to sustainably improve road safety,” said a spokesman for the Brandenburg police.
Alcohol violations in view
Another explosive aspect of this year's controls was the prevention of impaired driving caused by alcohol and drugs. In Brandenburg, two drivers were reported for driving under the influence of alcohol. In addition, nine other drivers were so drunk that they were subjected to a blood sample, and eleven had to provide blood samples because drug use was suspected. These figures are alarming as drivers who have consumed alcohol are up to 15 times more likely to be involved in fatal accidents than sober drivers, confirms a recent report from Road Safety.
Alcohol is the reason for around 25 percent of all road deaths in the EU. The excessive control of alcohol limits and the strict punishment of violations are part of the larger plan that the EU is pursuing by 2030: a reduction in road deaths and serious injuries by 50 percent. One of the most important tools for this remains the active enforcement of traffic regulations, which is largely in the hands of the Member States.
A look into the future of road safety
In order to better meet the challenges in road traffic, the ROADPOL “Operational Working Group” is planning numerous future measures. There are several special operations scheduled for 2025 that will address issues such as seatbelt requirements, distraction caused by mobile devices, and commercial vehicle safety. Based on the results of these measures, the strategies for improving road safety should be continuously optimized. The dates for the next campaigns have already been set: From February 17th to 23rd and May 5th to 11th there will be special operations for commercial vehicles. Another focus will be on controlling drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs. A 24-hour marathon on this topic is scheduled for March 20-21. June 2025 planned, as Roadpol reports.
As the police intensify their controls and take even more targeted action against traffic violations, a deterrent effect is created that both increases awareness of traffic safety problems and could save numerous lives. Ultimately, it remains the responsibility of all road users to act responsibly to make the roads safer.
