Health care reform in Brandenburg: Seelow shows the future of care!
On October 30, 2025, Brandenburg's Minister of Health, Britta Müller, visited the health campus in Seelow. As part of this visit, she presented the efforts of the IGiB (Innovative Health Care in Brandenburg), which is committed to future-proof health care in the region. Together with partners such as AOK Nordost and IKK Brandenburg and Berlin, the goal is to develop and implement innovative projects to meet the challenges in the healthcare system. AOK Northeast reports that the transformation of rural primary care hospitals plays a central role in this. The quality of medical care should be improved through the optimal use of existing resources.
Another important concern, emphasized by Catrin Steiniger, chairwoman of the Brandenburg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KVBB), is the need to give local actors enough scope for design and financing in order to expand and improve regional offerings. “We need freedom and the appropriate resources to strengthen health care in rural regions,” said Steiniger.
The Seelow health campus as a showcase project
The health campus in Seelow is already considered an example of successful regional care based on the principles of the IGiB. Waldemar Wiets, head of the health sector at AOK Nordost, emphasizes that the structural change in Seelow has a positive impact on the supply situation. The project brings together the experiences and will of regional actors to further improve health care.
An important element in this transformation is interdisciplinary collaboration between different healthcare providers. According to one Report from the Brandenburg Ministry of Health, the second IGiB Future Forum was held in Potsdam, where innovative concepts and new care models were discussed. Müller, who opened the event as patron, advocated for a fundamental reform of the health system in order to achieve the goal of universal care.
“The hospital reform will not only bring about changes, but also create opportunities for patient care,” explained Müller. The aim is for all hospital locations in Brandenburg to remain as central locations for regional healthcare, while at the same time concentrating more complex services and strengthening cross-sector planning.
The IGiB was founded in 2009 and is particularly committed to ensuring medical care in rural regions. Its members, including KVBB, AOK Nordost and the Guild Health Insurance Fund Brandenburg and Berlin, work together on creative solutions to meet the needs of the population.
In summary, it can be said that the efforts surrounding the IGiB and the health campus in Seelow set an example for future health care in Brandenburg. It remains to be seen how these developments will shape the regional structure in the long term.
