New planting festival: Citizens' forest grows to 72 trees in Brandenburg!

On the last Saturday in October, not only nature was in bloom in Brandenburg, but also the commitment of the citizens. With a colorful one Planting festival The community forest grew to an impressive 72 trees. Around 150 participants from the public as well as representatives of companies and associations witnessed this collaborative work.

Last year, 40 trees were planted, and this time we enjoyed 32 more native deciduous and coniferous trees. Mayor Steffen Scheller and Guido Löhst, the head of property management, were there to present certificates to the new tree sponsors. “Your support for the community forest is simply priceless!” said Scheller gratefully.

A celebration for the community

The festival not only attracted visitors with the opportunity to plant their own trees, but also with culinary delicacies. The F-Juniors of BSC Süd 05 Brandenburg created a sweet and warm atmosphere by offering cakes and grilled sausages for donations. Musically, the good tone was also ensured: the Brandenburg Folk Choir and the marching band of the Free Tambour Association Stahl Brandenburg e.V. did the honors and accompanied the event with lively melodies.

These herbal actions are not unique. A second planting festival is already planned for the end of October 2026, where new tree sponsors will be invited to plant their donated trees in the ground. In this way, the community forest can grow steadily and with it the awareness of sustainability and community responsibility. Meeting point Brandenburg reports that those interested can register for future sponsorships.

Part of urban development

The community forest is perceived not only as a place of trees, but rather as a symbol of sustainable urban development. Initiatives like these are part of a larger trend toward nature-based solutions in urban areas. Projects in other European cities, such as Limerick, Veszprém and Budapest, show that integrating nature and community into urban planning brings decisive benefits. Examples from the URBACT network demonstrate how such initiatives can have a positive impact on quality of life, climate adaptation and education. URBACT presents eight such good practices that can inspire and serve as role models.

Overall, festivals like this show that there is a lot of potential lying dormant in our cities and that it is worth tackling it together. Because a thriving future is created in a place where sustainability and community spirit go hand in hand. So it remains to be seen what further steps the community forest will take in the near future.
