Beaver causes flood chaos in Glienicke - citizens are desperate!
In Glienicke/Nordbahn, a beaver caused significant problems. John and Sigrun Aschmann's garden has been under water for months, and it's not just a small shower. Trees and bushes fall as flood levels rise through a beaver dam, which is under strict conservation protection. The “Schnelle Havel” water and soil association is faced with a challenge because they cannot do anything at the moment. Association engineer Bernhard Meinke has already submitted an application to remove the dam to the Lower Nature Conservation Authority, and those affected now have to wait for a decision. This situation is causing major, sometimes legally complex, problems that are affecting more and more people in the region. maz-online.de
But the beaver is not the only issue in the Oberhavel area. In Gransee, the city is planning a new residential area on around six hectares that will offer space for up to 500 people. This development has been discussed in the city council since 2020. Mayor and head of the building authority Christian Tutsch announced that the Gewo Gransee housing company would serve as the first point of contact for this project. But it could still be a while before the first new houses are built, as the project could take years or even decades.
Economy and social challenges
At the other end of the spectrum, ORBA Baustoffe GmbH in Oranienburg is causing a stir as it will close at the end of the month. The closure comes for economic reasons and could pose further challenges for the region. The company, which was founded in 1994, most recently employed three people. With the closure of the branch in Beeskow, only the branch in Templin remains open, which raises questions about the economic conditions.
Another tough case is the case of a 53-year-old nurse who is said to have sexually assaulted a patient between 2016 and 2021. The incident puts the Oberhavel Kliniken in the headlines. The defendant is planning to confess, and the court has signaled that a suspended sentence and 5,000 euros in compensation are in prospect.
Environmental and water issues
Amid all these challenges, community development does not stand still. The “We-Restaurant am See” in Liebenwalde is committed to enriching the region’s culinary offerings. Special lunches are served there on Wednesdays through Fridays, including today a tasty meatloaf with Brussels sprouts and potatoes - an example of how local businesses survive despite difficulties.
The current state of affairs in the region is a reflection of a variety of challenges, ranging from economic issues to social problems to environmental concerns. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and what solutions the affected communities will develop.
