Oberhavel invests 60 million: new comprehensive school for 700 students!

The educational landscape in the Oberhavel district will soon change fundamentally. On October 29, 2025, Education Minister Steffen Freiberg (SPD) handed over the decision for the construction of a new comprehensive school in the Schönfließ district of the Mühlenbecker Land municipality to District Administrator Alexander Tönnies. This new institution, which is expected to begin operations with 700 students in the 2028/29 school year, will represent an important offering for the growing number of students in the region. The district is planning to invest around 60 million euros in the construction of the five-room school, which is a remarkable step in school development.

Freiberg, who was reappointed Minister for Education, Youth and Sport on December 11, 2024, emphasized the importance of this school for the future of mobile and digitally-oriented education in Brandenburg during the handover. “We must offer all children equal opportunities,” he said. This is reflected not only in the planned comprehensive school, but also in other educational projects in the state.

The financing framework for education

Another component to improve the educational infrastructure is the recently approved financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB). A framework loan of 100 million euros is intended, among other things, to modernize and digitize daycare centers, schools and vocational schools in Brandenburg. These targeted investments include the purchase of IT equipment as well as the necessary IT training for teachers to improve the digital skills of both teachers and students.

With this loan, the EIB underlines its role as the EU's long-term financing institution. It is committed to supporting projects on competitiveness, innovation and sustainable development. In 2023, over 900 projects have already been supported with new financing totaling 88 billion euros, which are intended to trigger investments of around 320 billion euros.

Efficient planning for the future

District Administrator Tönnies emphasizes that existing plans for a second comprehensive school in Velten should also be taken into account when implementing the project. You want to use resources as efficiently as possible and start construction as quickly as possible. A good hand in project implementation can make a crucial difference.

Brandenburg is in the midst of educational change, and with the construction of the new comprehensive school, the state is showing that it wants to actively meet the challenges of the growing number of students. There is something going on and the anticipation of the new school is already noticeable.
