Public prosecutor stops investigations into right-wing extremist slogans in Bötzow
In recent weeks, reporting on right-wing extremist incidents in Germany has increased in intensity. A particularly shocking incident occurred on Men's Day 2024, when about a dozen people in Bötzow drove around in a chariot wearing black tops. This group shouted the slogan “Germany for the Germans, foreigners out!”, which caused consternation among local residents. A young man filmed this scene and sent the video to the MAZ.
The police and state security then began investigations and forwarded the case to the public prosecutor's office. However, this discontinued the proceedings because there was not enough suspicion. This is a decision that falls under Section 170 Paragraph 2 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (StPO). Despite the majority of eyewitness reports and the available video, no sufficient evidence of a crime was found. According to reports, the Kremser remained undisturbed as it drove through Marwitzer Strasse, and many neighbors did not intervene.
Similar incidents in other regions
But the incident in Bötzow is not the only one that has heated up tempers. Similar investigations were also closed in Flensburg because of right-wing extremist chants in a bar on Sylt. There, the four young adults involved chanted the line “Foreigners out, Germany for the Germans” to the tune of a well-known song. Here too, the public prosecutor decided that no sufficient criminal offense of sedition could be proven. While the statements showed reservations about foreigners, there was no evidence of aggressive disrespect or open hostility. A fine of 2,500 euros was applied for to a non-profit organization against only one of the four people involved. This handling is causing a lot of public anger, especially after a video of the incident went viral.
The situation in Bötzow and the events on Sylt shed light on a larger problem in Germany. Reports of racist statements and right-wing extremist incidents continue to come to light. While the authorities work to clarify the matter, the question remains as to how these social tensions can be further reduced. After the incident, there was still calm in the Bötzow neighborhood and the village festivals took place without any notable riots. Nevertheless, there is a feeling of insecurity, even if not all residents found the courage to defend themselves against the slogans.
