Brandenburg on the upswing: Tesla catapults us to the top!

What is happening in Brandenburg? The federal state impresses with an outstanding record in the “Future Atlas 2025”. According to that Daily Mirror Brandenburg took first place among all East German states. Prognos AG has assessed the economic and social development of a total of 400 rural and urban districts in Germany, and the result could hardly be better for Brandenburg. Eastern Brandenburg in particular has made a remarkable leap through massive investments, such as Tesla's Gigafactory in Grünheide.

The Gigafactory plays a key role in this recovery. Brandenburg's economic situation is noticeably improving, which is reflected in a sparkling interest in the region. Tesla has not only significantly boosted local economic growth, but also increased the total number of jobs in the region to over 12,000. In the first half of 2023, Brandenburg recorded the greatest economic growth of all federal states with an increase of 6.0 percent compared to the previous year, clearly led by the automotive industry Capital reported.

Economic recovery through investments

The expansion of vehicle production in Brandenburg has not only had positive effects on the gross domestic product (GDP), but has also formed a value chain as more and more suppliers are based in the region. Despite general difficulties in other federal states, Brandenburg shows that things can work differently. While the economy as a whole will shrink by 0.3 percent in 2023, industry in Brandenburg is flourishing thanks to the “Tesla effect,” which ensured an over 13 percent increase in gross value added in the manufacturing sector.

But it's not just the vehicles that have it all. The lozenges of the engines of progress in Brandenburg are also the structural funding as part of the coal phase-out and the new Berlin Airport, which offer the region additional perspectives. Brandenburg's Economics Minister Daniel Keller (SPD) sees these developments as a strong signal for the future of the federal state and emphasizes that Brandenburg is the economic driving force in East Germany.

Risks and challenges for the future

However, there are also challenges that should not simply be ignored. There are clear differences in the assessment of future opportunities. Six of the 18 districts and four independent cities have balanced future prospects, while there are high risks in areas such as Prignitz and Uckermark. This differentiation makes it clear that, despite the positive development in the outskirts of the city, not all regions are prospering to the same extent.

A comprehensive investigation of the daily news shows that the East German economy is expected to grow faster than the German economy as a whole in 2024 and 2025, driven by consumer-related services and increasing purchasing power, especially through higher pension adjustments and a market geared towards growing domestic consumption. But it remains to be seen whether these developments will remain stable in the long term or whether they will encounter unforeseen risks.

Brandenburg has done a lot right in recent years and continues to focus on growth through strategic investments and innovations. The question that concerns us all: Can this economic boom be sustained? In any case, the country remains a hot candidate for future developments and will certainly continue to be the focus of economic policy.
