Special exhibition Typically Lausitz: Art views for the anniversary!
In the heart of Lusatia, an exciting special exhibition opens today in the museum of the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district. Under the title “Typically Lausitz”, the Lausitz Art Collection is celebrating its 40th anniversary with an impressive show that documents the structural change in the region over four decades. The opening took place on July 15, 2025, and visitors can look forward to around 70 works that are both artistic and historical.
Museum spokeswoman Jenny Linke explained that the exhibition includes drawings, graphics and sculptures, including a very special sculpture made from open-cast wood. The outstanding exhibits include Michael Kruscha's work “Lost Places” from 2013, which vividly focuses on coal mines and village buildings. But the lively “Summer Garden Festival” by Harald Metzkes from 1999, which depicts people dancing, also attracts attention.
Typically Lausitz: A look into the past
“Typically Lausitz” is not only a retrospective observation, but also brings a breath of fresh air to the permanent exhibition of the art collection, which is located in Senftenberg Castle. The exhibition runs until October 5, 2025 and features works by artists who were born or lived in the region. The Lausitz Art Collection contains a total of over 2,500 works by around 200 artists, which underlines the diversity and creativity of Lausitz and makes it a place of living art.
The art collection has changed enormously in recent years through numerous purchases and donations from artists and their estates and is continually growing. From 2010 to 2022, the collection was expanded to include important works and now also includes newer artists such as Theo Boettger and Michael Horwath, who always keep the connection to the region in mind - a central requirement for all works shown.
Artists and community
The collection not only offers works by established artists such as Carl Lohse and Elisabeth Wolf, but also attaches great importance to the representation of contemporary art. The changing exhibitions are dedicated to the artistic examination of everyday life and life in Lusatia and show that this region has more than just history to offer. There are also special educational offers aimed at families, young people and seniors, making the museum a place for exchange and learning.
Visitors who want to reach the museum in Senftenberg will find parking options in the old town and at the city harbor. Even though the train station is about 1,300 meters away, the route to the museum is a worthwhile trip for those interested in art and culture. Although there are unfortunately no wheelchair rentals, strollers and baby carriers are available, making a visit suitable for all ages.
The experience is rounded off by the in-house museum shop, which offers regional products, souvenirs and literature. For special occasions, there are also event halls that can be rented and offer group activities and guided tours. A visit to the exhibition “Typically Lausitz” promises not only an exciting insight into the art, but also into the lifestyle of this region, which has its very own, typical flair.
