Berlin and Brandenburg: population boom in 2024 despite decline!

The current migration statistics show that Berlin and Brandenburg recorded a considerable increase in population last year. According to the Borken newspaper In 2024, more people will move to the two federal states than from them. For Berlin in particular, there is a migration gain of over 27,000 people, which is based exclusively on immigration from abroad.

Brandenburg can also boast a positive result. More than 22,000 people sought their fortune here in 2024, with arrivals from abroad as well as from the capital itself being registered. However, if you compare the numbers with the previous year, there is a certain decline in migration dynamics: Brandenburg recorded an increase of 29,786 people in 2023, while in 2024 there were only 22,629.

The Berlin districts in focus

The picture in Berlin looks similar: While 32,765 people came to the city in 2023, this number fell to 27,107 in 2024. It is interesting that nine out of twelve Berlin districts recorded an influx. The popularity of Reinickendorf was particularly high, where 16,264 new residents were counted. In the middle of these growth regions, however, there were also districts with a negative migration balance, such as Mitte, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Neukölln, where existing residents tended to migrate to the outer parts of the city.

The influx in Berlin developed quite differently. Reinickendorf and Mitte were the clear pioneers, followed by other districts. The situation is similarly positive for the Berlin area, where almost all districts were able to record gains. The only exception is the Oder-Spree district, which is struggling with an internal migration loss of 4,795 people.

Brandenburg's asylum seekers and immigrants

What also stands out for Brandenburg is the central reception center for asylum seekers in Eisenhüttenstadt, which shapes part of the migration process. However, there was a small decrease from Potsdam, as 376 people migrated to other Brandenburg districts.

The migration statistics are nothing new. The migration balance has been recorded and updated regularly since 2010, as can be seen from Statista. The inflows and outflows will be documented in detail until 2024, and fluctuations in particular districts are always of interest. From 2025, the Federal Statistical Office will use the cell key method to keep data secret, an innovative technique that corresponds to slight changes in the number of cases.

It will be really exciting to see how the migration movements in Berlin and Brandenburg will develop. The big cities still have a lot of appeal, and it seems as if the population in urban centers is very popular. If the trends continue, both Berlin and Brandenburg could undergo very dynamic development - from which the entire region could benefit, as well Statistics Authority of the region suggests.
