Find out how Neuruppin and Oranienburg are reacting to the current heat waves to ensure health and relaxation.

Heat wave over Neuruppin: This is how citizens protect themselves from the scorching heat!
The heat wave that has hit Germany in the last few days has not stopped at Neuruppin. According to the German Weather Service, a hot 31.4 degrees Celsius was measured in the city on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. This means that Neuruppin is only a stone's throw away from the 35.9 degrees that were achieved in its sister city Bad Kreuznach. Temperatures of up to 37 degrees Celsius are expected on Thursday, which has prompted the city administration to issue recommendations on how best to behave on such hot days. A real heat hotspot is the monastery church in Neuruppin, which, at a pleasant 23 degrees Celsius, offers a welcome retreat to escape the heat. It's open on Thursday and Friday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. so everyone can keep cool.
But the rising temperatures are not only unpleasant, they also have serious consequences. The Robert Koch Institute reports over 1,600 heat deaths in Germany in 2025, with older people particularly affected. Robert Liefke, managing director of the Neuruppiner Wohnungsbaugesellschaft, expresses concern about the heat stress, especially in the prefabricated buildings, which have become a challenge for many older tenants. They have often given up their allotments and are now sitting in their hot apartments. In view of this situation, Liefke is skeptical about the options for heat protection, because air conditioning is not affordable for many people.
Public drinking fountains offer relief
It looks similar in the wider area. In Oranienburg, several public drinking fountains were also built and a water arch was installed to provide cooling. The city is also working on a concept for adapting to climate change, which also includes heat protection measures. In contrast, the mayor of Rheinsberg is skeptical and considers a heat protection concept to be unnecessary because nature offers sufficient opportunities for relaxation.
Climate change and heat waves – a growing problem
Climate change cannot be explained away. There are noticeable consequences in Germany, where heat waves are occurring more and more frequently and are affecting people's performance. Older people and people with previous illnesses are particularly at risk. The German Weather Service regularly provides information about heat warnings and gives the population tips on how to help themselves. The Federal Center for Health Education also offers valuable information on health impairments caused by heat and protective measures.
At the local level, heat adaptation measures are also being tested in smaller communities such as Ihringen. A research project called PROLOK was launched here to develop local heat protection measures. The municipality organizes workshops to find solutions directly with citizens that take the special circumstances into account. Even though Neuruppin and the surrounding communities are still at the beginning, awareness of the problem has grown and the measures are constantly being adapted.
So the heatwave shows us not only the urgency with which we must address climate change, but also the power of community coming together to create solutions. Now we can only hope that the coming days will bring relief and that the temperatures will soon fall back to a bearable level.
