Cycle path renovation in Potsdam-Mittelmark: Safe enjoyment for cyclists!

From September 8th, 2025, things will come to life on the K 6903 district road in the Potsdam-Mittelmark region, as renovation work on the popular cycle path begins. The plan is to complete the construction site by November 14, 2025. The condition of the cycle path has already attracted attention due to numerous damages such as embankment failures, cracks and root breaks, and these defects pose a real safety risk. According to the information from Potsdam-Mittelmark Around 4,500 square meters of the cycle path will be closed and safer, resurfaced and equipped with special root protection films to prevent future damage.

But what does this mean for ongoing cycling? It's simple: During the construction phase, the cycle path will be completely closed to pedestrians and cyclists. They have to move onto the K 6903 lane, whereby the maximum permissible speed is reduced to 50 km/h. To ensure clear communication, there will be appropriate signage indicating the changed traffic routing. All road users are asked to be particularly attentive and considerate.

A step in the right direction

The renovation of the cycle path is not just a local measure, but rather fits into a larger picture of the cycling infrastructure in Germany. Loud ACO The cycling networks across large parts of the country are outdated and urgently need to be renewed. There are often no safe cycle paths to be found, especially in rural areas, which means that cyclists have to use busy roads independently.

To counteract this, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) launched the special financial aid program “City and Country”. Not only projects in the Potsdam-Mittelmark region should benefit here, but nationwide investments are being made in cycling infrastructure in order to increase the safety and attractiveness of cycling. In particular, the measures to renovate and upgrade cycle paths are being advanced with the help of these funds. The program has been extended until 2028 and now includes an impressive 805 million euros, as also by BMV reported.

A collaborative approach to safe bike paths

The total amount of 1.9 billion euros available by 2030 offers municipalities and states the opportunity to create comprehensive cycling networks and renovate existing facilities. Applications for funding can be submitted to the respective state government, and the measures are often funded with up to 75 percent of the costs. In the best case, financially weak municipalities in particular receive up to 90 percent of the costs reimbursed. It therefore seems clear that long-term thinking is being taken here and cyclists should be able to trust that their means of transport can be used safely and comfortably.

The planned renovation of the K 6903 cycle path is therefore not just a necessity, but a sign that the region is researching, investing and planning to make cycling safer and more attractive through a seamless, high-quality cycle path network.
