Unknown people destroy 40 fruit trees in Werder - damage over 100,000 euros!
A shocking attack on local nature was carried out in Werder (Havel). In the past few weeks, unknown perpetrators have damaged or even destroyed a total of 40 fruit trees between Lehniner Chaussee and Derwitzer Weg. The material damage caused amounts to over 100,000 euros, as [rbb24] reports. These trees were all planted by the Brandenburg State Roads Authority and were part of a compensatory measure for the expansion of the L90, which makes the matter all the more outrageous.
The perpetrators apparently had extensive knowledge of how to permanently damage trees. Some trees have been sawn, which can lead to tree tops breaking off in strong winds and this looks like a natural break. Another perfidious approach was drilling into the root base, which severely impaired the conductive pathways and thus the stability of the trees. [t-online.de] highlights that these tactics indicate targeted and deliberate destruction.
Perpetrator search and investigations
The police have now received a criminal complaint for “damage to property that is harmful to the community”, which was filed on July 24th. Due to the seriousness of the crimes, the investigation is still in full swing. Police officers have already checked and documented the damage in order to track down the perpetrators. The period of the crime extends over several weeks before the report is filed, which makes it even more difficult to find those responsible.
These incidents not only bring climate change and people's responsibility for the environment into the conversation, but they also shed light on the importance of the nature and environmental protection debate. According to [Statista], nature reserves are a central element of environmental protection, and in Germany the protection of the natural basis of life for all living beings is increasingly being discussed. Awareness of environmentally harmful behavior is also high among young people, as shown by a survey in which 75% of respondents believe that not enough is being done to protect the environment.
An appeal to the community
One can only hope that such acts do not gain the upper hand. Protecting trees and the natural environment is a shared responsibility. At a time when climate change and the loss of biodiversity are increasingly coming into focus, every individual must treat nature with care and respect. It was only recently published that among the endangered species worldwide are many plants and animals that live in our immediate environment. It is up to us to do our part to ensure that losses like the ones that happened in Werder do not happen again.
