Construction site turbulence in Potsdam: How to avoid the traffic jam!

Things are going haywire in Potsdam! The urban construction work is picking up speed and one can say: traffic jams are inevitable. Starting next Monday, August 11th, the Schopenhauerstrasse between Luisenplatz and Hegelallee renovated. Things get a little tight here because there is only one lane open to the north and turning into Hegelallee is not possible. The whole thing takes about two weeks, after which it's time for the oncoming lane.

The diversions have already been determined: traffic will be routed via Breite Straße, Dortustraße, Yorckstraße, Am Platz der Unity, Charlottenstraße, Hebbelstraße to Kurfürstenstraße. If you come from the north, you have to take a wide route via Pappelallee and Jägerallee.

Further construction sites at a glance

In addition to Schopenhauerstrasse, drivers can expect obstructions in other places. On Lutherplatz Sewer network work is underway in the roundabout. There will be a partial closure on August 13th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on August 15th from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Here vehicles can only turn from Großbeerenstrasse into Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse.

In addition, the permanent construction sites at the Leipziger triangle and on Nuthestraße remain. There is also half-way access to Nedlitzer Straße between Georg-Hermann-Allee and Esplanade. Here traffic is redirected into the city via Georg-Hermann-Allee and Kiepenheuerallee.

Long-term construction projects

By the end of September there will be several significant projects that will change the face of the city. That's how it will beAmundsenstrassebetween Potsdamer Straße and will be partially closed for a period of almost a year for the renewal of the drinking water pipe and the waste water network. However, one lane in each direction will remain, which should ease the situation somewhat.

On theGroßbeerenstrasseThe road and cycle path between Potsdam and the Friedensstraße/Potsdamer Damm roundabout will be completely renovated by August 22nd. Construction sites on theHorstweg, which began erecting a supporting structure on August 8th, will only be closed to traffic until August 11th, while theGeorg-Hermann-Alleeshould also be mobile again from the end of September.

Another focus is on theBrandenburg Street, where extensive repair work has been carried out since September last year. The work is expected to continue until the end of March 2026. So in the next few months it's important to be patient while Potsdam continues to develop and improve.

Finally, all that remains to be said is: whether for shopping, going to work or just strolling – in Potsdam from now on you should keep your eyes open and, if necessary, take a detour in order to reach your destination in a relaxed manner.
