Feulner receives an adjunct professorship for climate physics in Potsdam

Georg Feulner, a respected climate research scientist, was recently awarded the title of adjunct professor in the field of climate physics by the University of Potsdam. This was done in May 2025 to recognize his outstanding contributions to teaching and research, particularly on the paleoclimatic evolution of the Earth system. Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) reports that Feulner has been active at the interface between science and education for years.

As deputy head of the “Earth System Analysis” department at PIK, Feulner heads the “Past and Future of the Earth” working group. He coordinates the development of the new Earth system model POEM, which plays an important role in climate modeling, as well as the collection and analysis of climate data from different epochs. Climate research is a broad field that deals with changes in the climate and their effects, as in Education Server is listed.

Setting priorities in research

Feulner's scientific work focuses in particular on:

  • Die Erforschung des Klimas in der Erdgeschichte
  • Das Klima der frühen Erde
  • Frühere Eiszeitalter
  • Treibhausklimata der Vergangenheit
  • Klimaveränderungen während Massenaussterben
  • Vom Menschen verursachter Klimawandel

His teaching activities at the University of Potsdam go back over a decade. He received the faculty award for outstanding teaching in 2015 and has since established himself as a private lecturer, having been appointed private lecturer in 2022 and previously completing his habilitation in 2018. These achievements underscore his commitment to academic education and the importance of his combination of subjects that address historical climatic conditions.

International recognition

His expertise is not only recognized in Germany: in 2018 he was awarded the Ida Pfeiffer Professorship at the University of Vienna, and in 2024 he received the Sir Kirby Laing Fellowship at the School of Ocean Sciences at Bangor University in Great Britain. Such honors are not only a testament to his work, but also an indicator of international interest in paleoclimatology, a field that is, according to... Spektrum.de engaged in the study of past climatic conditions.

The interdisciplinary approach to climate research that Feulner and his colleagues pursue is crucial to sustainably understanding and overcoming the challenges of climate change. With his diverse research interests, he contributes significantly to expanding knowledge about climate development on Earth and responding to the pressing questions of today.
