Protect rainforest: Exhibition in Potsdam shows sustainable solutions!
Potsdam, Deutschland - The tropical forests face an enormous challenge: deforestation and climate change are heavily increasing this important living space. An average of 200,000 square kilometers of tropical rainforest disappears annually - this corresponds to a large part of the biodiversity of the earth. These forests are not only of great importance for their respective countries, but also for the global climate, since they absorb greenhouse gases and act as important carbon storage. Previous studies have often only dealt with the size of the interpreted areas, while the Leipzig scientists have now extensively examined the late consequences of this clearing and clarify that, for example, a ninth of all man-made carbon emissions is due to the deforestation of the rainforest. The importance of protecting these ecosystems should therefore not be underestimated.
But what makes these rainforests so indispensable? They are part of a natural cycle. Dead plants are quickly decomposed and the nutrients get back into the ground. There is no garbage in nature, everything has its place. It was precisely this idea that was also taken up by the project "From rainforest to the residual waste bin", which is presented in Potsdam. The Biosphere Potsdam is committed to environmental protection and sustainability and shows how the modern circular economy contributes to protecting resources and effectively recycling.
A look at the data
The tropical rainforests, which take around 6% of the earth's surface, can be found in over 70 countries. The distribution in Brazil, Zaire and Indonesia is particularly concise, where together over 50% of these forests lie. These regions are characterized by high temperatures between 23 and 27 degrees Celsius and offer exceptional biodiversity with an estimated 80% of all animal species. Her vegetation, which consists of evergreen deciduous trees, creates numerous ecological niches. Here is an overview of the shares of the rainforests according to countries:
Land | share (%) Th> |
---|---|
Brazil | 33% |
zaire | 10% |
Indonesia | 10% |
The high humidity in these forests, which is often rarely less than 95%, and the rainfall of over 2000 millimeters a year, make tropical forests particularly dynamic ecosystems. But these huge natural forces are injured, and the protection of these valuable resources is not only important for the local, but also for the global climate. When deforestation, the stored carbon quickly gets into the atmosphere, which further fuels climate change.
where to go with the garbage?
An important aspect of the current discussion about environmental awareness is the question of waste management. The exhibition in Potsdam shows how everyone can contribute to the cleanliness of the world. The circular economy sees itself as a way to minimize the influence of deforestation and waste on the environment. By carefully selecting, treating and reusing resources, a sustainable solution can be created.
Finally, it can be said that the protection of the tropical rainforests and the promotion of sustainable practices have to go hand in hand. Only together can we encounter the challenges of deforestation and climate change and secure a livable future for future generations. The reports of the Federal Environment Agency and further studies on the effects of this deforestation provide important information in order to better understand and address these challenges.
