Replacement train service: Commuters from Wittenberge experience light and shadow!

Deutsche Bahn reports on progress in construction work on the important main line between Berlin and Hamburg. This general renovation, which began on August 1, 2025, covers more than 270 kilometers and will continue until the end of April 2026. This means that commuters and travelers can expect improved infrastructure in the long term.

Over 173 buses from the operator ecoVista are in daily use as rail replacement transport to ensure the necessary transport during construction work. Around 500 drivers were hired to carry out this replacement service, covering a total of 28 routes in six federal states. Complaints from commuters, especially from Wittenberge, about late or canceled buses are known, but the mayor of Wittenberge, Oliver Hermann, has already promised improvements. The feedback from commuters now shows a positive development, and the railway has also made some improvements to the replacement stops.

Comprehensive renovation measures

The general renovation includes extensive work on tracks, switches and safety technology. Deutsche Bahn plans to renovate a total of 280 kilometers of route by April 2026. This includes replacing 165 kilometers of track and repairing 61 kilometers. In addition, 249 switches will be replaced and old overhead lines and signal box technology will have to be replaced. These measures are necessary because the heavily used route is used by numerous trains every day at speeds of up to 230 km/h, including around 110 long-distance trains and 270 regional trains.

The state has devoted great focus to the entire project. In Ludwigslust, for example, a bridge from 1850 is being replaced. There will also be new signal box buildings and extensive vegetation work, which will begin in October 2025. The aim of this work is to improve safety and operations, in particular through the installation of the new “Future Railway Mobile Communication System” (FRMCS).

Known challenges

Despite the progress, there is evidence that challenges remain. Rail transport has suffered from delays in the past. Monthly punctuality in long-distance passenger transport fell from 80.9% to below 60% between January and August 2022. This has led to companies increasingly switching to truck transport. In view of the tense situation, Transport Minister Volker Wissing has declared the renovation of the entire railway network a top priority and emphasized the need for comprehensive maintenance. Over the next few years, over 4,000 kilometers of routes are to be sustainably repaired in order to revitalize the punctuality and attractiveness of rail transport.

With ongoing work and commitment to improving rail replacement services, Deutsche Bahn appears motivated to provide commuters in the Kölln region and beyond with a trustworthy transport service. In the long term, the numerous measures could provide passengers with a more reliable and comfortable travel experience.
