Dike renovation in Wentdorf: Create fuse for 1,160 residents!
The Elbdeich near Wentdorf in the municipality of Cumosen was extensively renovated and is now stable again. On June 12th, State Secretary Gregor Beyer and District Administrator Christian Müller visited the renewed section of the dike, which has been repaired over a length of almost 700 meters in the past two and a half years. These measures were necessary after cracks were found in a dike show in November 2022 and damage was also reported by a shepherd. The condition of the dike led to the classification as not stable, which was a high risk for the approximately 1,160 residents of the neighboring villages if flooding had occurred.
The renovation measures included digging the dike and the use of seepage -capable material. To increase the stability, a steel sheet was installed and the dike crown was adapted to the rated flood of 7.99 meters including a freeboard of one meter. It should be noted that the level in Wittenberge reached a stand of 7.85 meters at the 2013 record ranges. In addition, a new dike defense route was built and the dike crown and the bike path widened from 1.5 to 2.5 meters. The total costs of the measures amounted to around 3.4 million euros and were financed by the funds of the EU, the federal government and the state.
long -term challenges
The renovation of the dike in Wentdorf is only a small part of the comprehensive challenges in front of which the region is facing. The dikes along the Elbe in Prignitz have to be expanded over several decades, with the expected completion of the work on the dikes on the new design flood of almost eight meters on the Wittenberge level for 2056. Long planning procedures and personnel bottlenecks hinder the necessary progress, since the idea currently passes to implementation for about ten years.
Marko Oelze from the State Environment Agency reports that there is still a lot to do for the expansion of the dikes over at least 60 kilometers. In the coming decade, the expansion of the linden and royal dike in Wittenberge and the dike along the backstream areas will be planned for wise. [RBB24] emphasizes that the necessary adjustments to the flood protection systems are indispensable in order to be better up to future flood events.
demands for more resources
District Administrator Christian Müller has made it clear that more funds are urgently required for the expansion of the flood protection systems. Construction manager Robert Schmidt also demands that the planning times for dike renovations are shortened. State Secretary Beyer announced that the planning approval procedure should be eliminated within existing routes for dike renovations.
The flood protection has become more important not only in the Prignitz, but also nationwide. Floods can occur on all flowing waters and existing systems overwhelm. Dealing with these challenges requires a well -thought -out flood risk management, which not only includes the construction of dams and dikes, but also measures to create retention rooms and to restore natural water structures.
In summary, it can be said that the renovation of the Elbe dike in Wentdorf is a step in the right direction, but only a part of a much larger, long -term project that will deal with all those responsible and the region in the coming decades.Details | |
