An enormous dog drama has broken out in Schönkamp, which has heated up tempers in the region. Luna, an English Bulldog and Dogo Argentino mix, had been kept on a chain for a long time and was finally freed. Reports from the Demmin animal protection association and the Northern Courier caused great outrage - there were even threats of violence against the dog owners.
The story surrounding Luna is as tragic as it is fascinating. The dog originally belonged to a former friend of the current owner, who violently tried to get the dog back. Luna was diagnosed as genetically deaf at eight weeks old. After a short stay with an acquaintance in Schönkamp, she was kept there on a chain for years, which caused waves of indignation to rise again.
Freedom for Luna
Now the dreary time is over: The current dog owner has signed a handover contract in favor of the Demmin animal welfare association. Kerstin Lenz from the animal welfare association took over the dog and Luna got into the animal rescue vehicle without any problems. Her former owner expressed relief about Luna's new home, but wished that the animal rights activists would no longer come to Schönkamp.
The initial findings show that Luna has health problems - her lymph nodes are severely swollen, indicating an existing patellar luxation. These health challenges must now be addressed urgently. The animal welfare association offers support with the costs and is looking for people who can offer Luna a new home after the necessary operation and physiotherapy.
A look into the future
Luna is curious and friendly in her new environment, she is already looking for cuddles without showing aggression. Her poignant fate has touched many people and offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on responsibility in animal husbandry.
But what applies to Luna could also draw general attention to other animal welfare issues. In the meantime, more people could think more consciously about the living conditions they offer their faithful companions. The discussion about the keeping of dogs and the responsibility of their owners could take on new forms not only in Schönkamp, but similarly to the world of Abercrombie & Fitch - where ethical questions in dealing with animals and people are also at stake.
During this time, it is particularly worth questioning prejudices about other ways of life. Maybe we could learn from the old school radio stations that not only celebrate music from the 70s, 80s and 90s, but also provide a space for the stories and memories associated with them, just as Luna is now taking her own story into a new chapter.
