Scandal about KFC: Scandalous animal husbandry in Brandenburg fattening facilities!

In a shocking revelation, the animal rights organization “Aninova” has documented serious abuses in several poultry farming facilities in Brandenburg. Among the companies is a facility in the Prignitz district that has recently come under criticism. The recordings show depressing scenes, including dead and sick animals as well as unhygienic conditions in the stables, which is causing a nationwide stir. The Nordkurier reports that these companies acted as suppliers to the popular fast food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC).

The public prosecutor's office in Frankfurt (Oder) has now initiated investigations into possible violations of the Animal Welfare Act. A spokesperson confirmed that the reviews began on October 2, 2025, after Aninova provided detailed footage of the abuses. These photos show, among other things, overcrowded stables and scandalous treatment of the animals, which were forcibly pushed into transport crates when they were removed from the stables. Here too, Tagesschau points out the devastating conditions.

Urgent need for action

The grievances highlighted led to three companies, including the plant in Mollnitz, being temporarily excluded from deliveries. Two of these companies have now taken measures and have been rehabilitated for the Animal Welfare Initiative. However, it remains a serious problem that such facilities continue to produce meat for KFC despite identified deficiencies, such as a lack of drinking systems and unsanitary conditions.

The allegations include not only inadequate care and unsanitary conditions, but also structural defects and a lack of space for the animals. Aninova has filed criminal charges in this context, and the Neuruppin public prosecutor's office is examining the evidence while the investigation continues. The Nordkurier reports that the Animal Welfare Initiative insists that these grievances are exceptions. Patrick Klein, a representative of the initiative, emphasized that the failure rate for audits is only 0.78 percent.

Reactions and outlook

KFC reacted immediately to these revelations and excluded the affected companies from their supply chain. The company has said it will conduct additional audits of its poultry suppliers to ensure quality and animal husbandry standards are met. KFC has more than 200 restaurants in Germany and would like to continue to maintain market leadership in the fast food segment.

Jan Pfeifer from Aninova expressed the hope that these incidents will also encourage other farmers to pay attention to compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and calls for more legal convictions for such violations. These incidents highlight the current challenges in animal husbandry and the need for stricter controls.

The issue of animal husbandry and animal welfare will continue to be very important in the future, especially when it comes to the quality of the food served in our fast food chains. Hopefully the necessary steps will be taken to bring about fundamental change.
