Noise protection in Kemnitz: Speed limit of 30 km/h should calm traffic!

In Kemnitz, a small town in the Prignitz district, there has been a speed limit of 30 km/h on the entire town since June 2024. This was introduced at the request of the city of Pritzwalk in order to reduce noise pollution for residents. “The change has already brought about improvements, but the desired ideal situation is still a long way off,” explains mayor Martin Huber. The regular speeding - according to Huber, 20% of drivers do not adhere to the new rule - show that there is still a need for action.

Speed limit and traffic safety

This is particularly problematic because agricultural vehicles often drive too fast and the noise pollution cannot be controlled. Despite the speed reductions, Huber is calling for permanent speed monitoring. Gina Werthe, spokeswoman for the Prignitz district, confirms that there are still regular speed checks. Between May 2024 and May 2025, 2,440 speeding violations were detected and punished at a bus stop in Kemnitz. In March 2025, a mobile measuring system, a so-called semi-station, was even in use.

The requirements for the introduction of 30 km/h zones, which serve to calm traffic in residential areas, are clearly defined. They are permitted in urban areas and do not apply to main roads, such as STVO2Go explained. The aim is to significantly improve the quality of life through lower noise and exhaust fumes. In addition, there are measures such as narrowing the roadway to further reduce speed and offer pedestrians and cyclists more safety.

Regulation of speed enforcement

The Prignitz district road traffic authority has so far held back as no additional need for stricter measures has been expressed by the city administration or the village. Huber advocates making the measuring locations more flexible in order to make the controls more effective. The focus is therefore on increasing road safety and protecting citizens from danger.

Targeted speed monitoring is also important, as fines for speeding in 30 km/h zones are regulated in accordance with the road traffic regulations. The ADAC lists the speeding charges in these zones, which can range from 30 to up to 560 euros. This creates an additional incentive to stick to the rules.

Overall, the Kemnitz case shows that speed limits must be regularly checked and continually adjusted. The safety of road users, particularly pedestrians and cyclists, must be a top priority while protecting the quality of life of local residents.
