New chapter for the Redefin State Stud: Munz takes over interim business!

A change is coming in the traditional one Redefin State Stud before. Matthias Munz, an experienced consultant from Lübtheen, was appointed interim management of the stud on Wednesday. This step became necessary after the previous managing director was no longer able to fulfill her duties due to health problems. Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) announced that Munz would remain in office until the management was permanently replaced.

But the challenge couldn't be greater: the state stud farm is facing massive criticism due to years of high losses. The Taxpayers' Association is even calling for the facility to be sold because the annual subsidies of 1.8 million euros are considered unsustainable. So far, 41 million euros from tax revenue have flowed into the stud farm for running costs and 27 million euros for construction and plant investments. A new operator for the facility is not expected to be determined until mid-2026, as a selection process is scheduled to start at the end of August.

A new path for the state stud

Minister Backhaus had already announced on July 25th that an alternative operator model for the Redefin State Stud should be checked. This decision was ratified by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania cabinet because the stud farm is over 200 years old and is considered an economic “construction site” in the state budget. The aim of this test is to make the stud farm economically stable and at the same time to promote tourism development.

The country will continue to own the stud farm, which is assessed as a cultural asset of public interest. In order to find the right operators, an expression of interest process is being prepared. A new operator will be contractually obliged to fulfill public objectives, including the socially responsible transfer of staff. The challenges in marketing and location factors also influence the tourist use of the stud and must be addressed.

Events and future prospects

Despite these uncertainties, this remains Redefin State Stud Open during the transition phase and continues to offer events and training opportunities. Various events such as LebensArt, festival concerts and stallion parades are planned. Important to know: A valid ticket is required to enter paid events and there are no stud tours during the stallion parades.

The horse community is critical of the planned new operator concept. After all, over the last 20 years, five consultants have been hired to develop new concepts - so far without lasting success. The previous initiatives cost a total of almost 75,000 euros. The latest report from Munz is said to cost another 25,000 euros. An already announced future plan was also postponed again.

What will happen next with the Redefin State Stud remains to be seen. One thing is clear, however: the coming months will be crucial in setting the course for a hopefully positive future.
