Petition for faster trains from Neuruppin: Chance or illusion?

There is a lot going on with regional transport in the Neuruppin region, especially with regard to the RE6 line. There is currently a petition that aims to increase the frequency of regional trains between Neuruppin and Berlin to two trains per hour. According to maz-online.de this is a good idea, but as is so often the case, the devil is in the details. Although there are already plans to expand train traffic, there is a lack of rapid implementation.

The petition specifically suggests that the RE6 from Neuruppin should run in two possible routes: one leads to Kremmen and Hennigsdorf, the other to Löwenberg and Oranienburg. But there are concerns here, because in order to implement the new connection, the Oranienburgers would have to do without the RE6, which makes things complicated. As the information shows, Oranienburg train station has already reached its capacity limit, which makes rapid progress on this matter difficult.

Current challenges in train traffic

Meanwhile, commuters on the Prignitz Express RE6 are struggling with significant restrictions: In the months from April to June 2025, passengers from Neuruppin and Hennigsdorf must expect cancellations. The construction work between Velten and Kremmen leads to night-time interruptions, which severely impede effective transport. A replacement bus service will be set up, but with restrictions on taking bicycles, which significantly reduces comfort. According to moz.de, specific outages have already been documented on April 11th and 12th, and reductions in availability must also be accepted between 9 p.m. and midnight on Mondays and Tuesdays until June.

The impact of this construction work cannot be underestimated, especially for the commuter community who rely on reliable train service on a daily basis. On certain days in April and May, extensive restrictions are to be expected, which will throw the timetables into disarray.

The path to sustainable mobility

Amid these challenges, the need to strengthen public transport is more urgent than ever. The vdv.de highlights that passenger numbers have increased again since 2022, after temporarily declining due to the corona pandemic. Around 26 million people in Germany use buses and trains every day, which not only relieves pressure on private transport, but also makes an important contribution to reducing CO2 emissions.

In connection with the petition and the current challenges, local public transport is proving to be a forward-looking approach to solving traffic problems. The added value in the sustainable mobility economy amounts to around 118 billion euros, which is not only economically important but also secures numerous jobs.

In summary, the petition for a better train connection between Neuruppin and Berlin is justified, but the implementation is unnecessarily complicated by various factors. Having a good hand in solving these challenges will be crucial for the future of the region.
