When it comes to current topics relating to finances in Brandenburg, Schönefeld, the financially strongest municipality in the state, stands out. The location in the Dahme-Spreewald district is not only chic, but also lucrative, as the busy BER airport is located here. But with strength also comes significant financial responsibility: for 2025, Schönefeld will have to raise a financial equalization levy of almost 40 million euros. That is almost two thirds of the total levy volume for the coming year. In the previous year, the levy was set at around 29 million euros.
If you compare the values, you can see that after Schönefeld, the municipality of Liebenwalde in the Oberhavel district has to come up with the second highest levy of around 6.6 million euros. What is encouraging, however, is that Spremberg, a municipality in the Spree-Neiße district, is being confronted with a levy of around 4.1 million euros for the first time. Neutrebbin (Märkisch-Oderland) as well as Gerdshagen, Halenbeck-Rohlsdorf (both in Prignitz) and Pinnow (Uckermark) also have to enter the financial equalization scheme.
Financial equalization and tax power
The obligation to pay the financial equalization levy applies to municipalities whose tax capacity exceeds the needs figure by more than 15 percent. Part of the funds flows directly into the budgets of the respective districts, while the rest flows into the state's financial equalization pool. In this way, the relationship between the highly developed and those who may need support is maintained and the solidarity approach within Brandenburg is maintained.
