Wittenberge celebrates 25 years of the Elbland Festival: A cultural explosion!
There is a celebration in Wittenberge! The Elbland Festival, a cultural highlight of the region, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. This Friday and Saturday, the Old Oil Mill will be the scene of spectacular performances that will attract visitors from near and far. The origin of these festive events goes back to the 1990s, when the festival was initiated, initially as a controversial project by Andreas Schön and Heiko Reissig. What began as an experiment has now become a permanent fixture in the cultural calendar.
The first edition of the festival took place in the ruins of the Old Oil Mill and has developed splendidly since then. With its appealing ambience, the Alte Ölmühle is now an attractive event location, and the owner Lutz Lange is continually making the necessary modernizations. Mayor Oliver Hermann praises the Elbland Festival as an important location factor that contributes significantly to the tourism development of the city of Wittenberge.
Stars of the Elbland Festival
Over the years, the festival has welcomed numerous prominent guests. The most famous include the legendary entertainer Johannes Heesters, who was appointed Kammersänger in 2004 at the age of 100, as well as stars such as Deborah Sasson, René Kollo and Ivan Rebroff. These illustrious performances make the Elbland Festival a magnet for music and opera lovers. The program offers a colorful mix of musical genres, from opera and operetta to film music as well as rock and pop.
The festival program “An Italian Night on the Elbe”, which took place two years ago, is particularly remembered. In this edition of the festival, the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg will perform under the direction of Robert Reimer, supported by artists such as the soprano Eva Lind and the tenors Assaf Kacholi and Martin Shalita. Kim Fisher is hosting this 25th anniversary event.
Celebrate despite challenges
There have been a few breakdowns over the 25 years, but these have had no serious consequences. A notable incident occurred in 2019 when fireworks set the stage decorations on fire, but were quickly extinguished. The COVID-19 pandemic also presented the festival with major challenges. The events in 2020 and 2021 had to be canceled, even though there was no lockdown in summer 2021.
But that doesn't make the organizers lose heart. This year, visitors can look forward to an extensive supporting program that, in addition to musical performances, also includes attractive activities such as city tours with vintage buses and harbor tours on the Elbe. The guests of honor at the festival include Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke, State Parliament President Britta Stark and actor Udo Schenk.
The Elbland Festival is more than just a cultural highlight; they are part of Wittenberg's identity and a platform for artists and musicians of a wide variety of genres. If you are looking for more information about the festival and the supporting program, you can contact the Wittenberge Tourist Information Office. There is great anticipation for this special anniversary edition of the Elbland Festival - and not without reason!
