Educational emergency in Brandenburg: teaching positions cut – chaos looms!

The Brandenburg state government recently decided to make major savings in the education sector, which led to strong criticism from Teltow-Fläming and Dahme-Spreewald. The concerns of parents and teachers are great because the impact on the quality of education cannot be ignored. District parent representatives and school advisory board chairmen such as Anett Kehling warn of negative consequences that could arise from this decision. Maz Online reports that over 16,000 lessons were canceled in Dahme-Spreewald in the 2023/24 school year alone, which of course has an impact on the students.

The situation regarding the cancellation of classes is alarming. For the first half of 2024/25, more than 10,000 hours were already lost, and around a quarter of the substitute hours in high schools remained unfilled. Parents are seriously concerned about educational gaps, especially in the context of the deficits already caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Teachers are now expected to teach additional hours under the conditions of the job cuts, which could further aggravate the already tense situation.

Challenges in the education system

The school structure in the region is threatened by the cuts. Christian Quade, also from the Teltow-Fläming district school advisory board, says that support lessons, inclusion offers and working groups could be affected. Nevertheless, the Ministry of Education defends the savings, as the funds have increased by over 300 million euros. We must keep in mind the increasingly worrying development of the teacher shortage throughout Germany. Loud Bpb 50% of schools are unable to fill at least one position and many teachers work overtime due to staff shortages.

In addition, some federal states are particularly affected by the situation. An example is Saxony-Anhalt, where almost half of new hires are made by people without regular teacher training. The Standing Scientific Commission of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs even warns of dramatic effects on the quality of teaching. Fewer students from socially disadvantaged families have a major disadvantage, as reduced teaching times have a detrimental effect on their performance.

Future outlook

A look into the future shows that a significant teaching gap is expected in Germany by 2035. According to forecasts, there could be up to 85,000 vacancies. Statista emphasizes that the focus is particularly on the need for teachers at lower secondary level and vocational schools. The development also shows that the number of graduates and birth rates will have a decisive influence on the future of education.

It is clear that dealing with the education crisis in Brandenburg cannot be viewed in isolation. Many schools are faced with the challenge of closing educational gaps while the need for teachers increases. Both the Ministry of Education and those responsible for municipalities are required to find forward-looking solutions in order to offer the next generations an adequate education. The concerns of parents and teachers are justified, and it is high time that the audible voices are heard before classes are canceled even further.
