Mayoral election in Nuthe-Urstromtal: Two candidates, big questions!

The political landscape in Nuthe-Urstromtal is taking shape as the mayoral election is just around the corner. On September 28, 2025, two candidates will compete against each other: the incumbent mayor Stefan Scheddin and his challenger Rajko Prill. How maz online reports, Scheddin is non-partisan and has managed the community's fortunes since 2018. Prill, on the other hand, represents the AfD and wants to bring a breath of fresh air into official business.

Stefan Scheddin has had an eventful political career. Before his election as mayor, he was already active as a community representative and mayor of Ahrensdorf. Born in Luckenwalde and living in Ahrensdorf, he sees himself as a conservative and worked as a construction plumber before his political career. For Prill, who also saw the light of day in Luckenwalde, this is the first major challenge in the political arena after he moved into the district council in 2024 and is now making the preservation of cultural landscapes and protection against destruction caused by renewable energies the focus of his candidacy.

Election date and right to vote

The election of the new mayor in Nuthe-Urstromtal will take place as part of a regular election cycle and is scheduled for September 28, 2025. The new mayor will be elected for the next eight-year term. The SPD local association surprisingly decided not to put forward its own candidate. This is probably also a reaction to the weak 7.8 percent of the votes that the party was able to achieve in the last local elections left notes.

Local elections in Germany, including those in Nuthe-Urstromtal, are shaped by the laws of the individual federal states. The Basic Law requires that such elections be general and secret, which encourages citizens to exercise their right to vote. Even though voter turnout is often lower than in federal or state elections, local political issues that are close to voters' minds are very important in the region.

The election history

A look back at the last mayoral election shows that three candidates ran in 2017: Monika Nestler from DIE LINKE, Stefan Noack from the SPD and Stefan Scheddin as an individual candidate. At that time, citizens went to the polls with great interest - followed by election campaign measures such as flyers and public information stands. Nestler, who was considered the favored candidate, won the election with 43.7 percent of the vote.

The next three months until the election will be crucial for both candidates. It remains to be seen which issues are important to voters and how the two candidates can effectively communicate their positions and wishes. One thing is certain: democracy is alive and the voices of citizens are crucial for the future of the community.
