Starting school in the Uckermark: Children start school life safely!

A big event is just around the corner: Next Saturday, September 6th, 2025, a new phase of life begins for many children aged six or seven in Brandenburg - starting school. In the Uckermark district, a total of 917 ABC shooters will start their new path at state primary schools. The distribution of students is concentrated in different cities: 257 small school children in Schwedt, 167 in Prenzlau, 135 in Angermünde and 82 in Templin. Children from independent schools also take part in this exciting time.

A very special school starting party is organized for little Mina Wölk. The six-year-old student is excited to explore her new class at the Goetheschule in Templin for the first time. With three friends from the “Spatzennest” daycare center at her side, she immediately feels at home and looks forward to learning reading, English and music. To properly celebrate the transition to school, her parents are planning a family celebration that includes coffee and a barbecue. But that's not all: To prepare the little ones for the trip to school, the parents even organized a get-to-know-you trip in a Volvo tractor, which left many smiling faces.

Road safety in schools

With the start of school, responsibility on the road also increases. Transport Minister Detlef Tabbert urgently appeals to all road users to be particularly careful. This is achieved through the campaign “Better safe. Better live.” underlined, which was started shortly before the start of the new school year. Over 500 banners were put up by more than 250 schools in the country to remind road users to be mindful.

In addition, this will Zebra Theater active, which is dedicated to educating young road users. Every year, the theater educates tens of thousands of elementary school students about the most important rules in traffic through entertaining plays. Under the motto “Learn safety through play,” the children are actively involved in the theater performances. In the next theater tour, which will take place from November to December this year, schools have the opportunity to invite the ZeBra Theater to playfully teach their children important behavior in traffic.

Safe routes to school for all little adventurers

In order to make children's journeys to school safer, comprehensive traffic education measures are essential. Good mobility education begins at home and in kindergarten and continues at school. Nevertheless, it turns out that a good understanding of traffic alone is often not enough. Distractions can seriously impair your awareness of road hazards. Schools therefore combine traffic education with psychomotor exercises to promote children's ability to move and react.

For many children, going to school is the first step towards independence, but it also carries risks. According to statistics, from 2010 to 2018, around 10.1% of all people involved in road traffic accidents were between 0 and 15 years old. This highlights the urgent need to secure routes to school, especially in Brandenburg, where the number of children with accidents increases as their independence increases.

Through initiatives such as “bus school” and “cycling training,” schools strive to teach students about safety when using school buses and cycling. These measures are enshrined in law in Brandenburg and help to establish road safety as an integral part of the school curriculum, as mbjs.brandenburg.de explains.

Starting school is an exciting adventure for many children, and with appropriate traffic education programs and a committed community, we strengthen the safety of our little protégés on their journey.
