Historical calendar shows forgotten GDR splendor in Prenzlau!

What's new from Prenzlau? In the tranquil Uckermark, the Verden calendar manufacturer shows how valuable memories of bygone times can be. A historical calendar for the year 2026 was recently published, which focuses on the city of Prenzlau with impressive photographs. The calendar will win many hearts, especially in the run-up to Christmas, when gifts play a central role.

The images come from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s in the GDR and offer a look at small and large sights that are no longer likely to be present to many residents and visitors. Aglaia Wichmann, an employee at the factory, describes the images as a valuable historical source. “They provide insights into a forgotten time,” she says, making it clear how important such recordings are. The places shown include the lakeside restaurant “Zum Kap”, the film theater in the city and the popular seaside resort.

A calendar full of memories

The format of the calendar is A4 and is already sold in the Schulz bookstore on Prenzlauer Friedrichstrasse. Demand is high: the first copies were quickly sold out, and many respondents said that they consider books and calendars to be ideal Christmas gifts - in 2024 this figure was even 49 percent

At a time when technological aids are playing an increasingly important role, it is refreshing to look back at such nostalgic objects. In this way, the combination of past and present can be experienced and offers a welcome change from the digital world.

Another trend that concerns many people includes current technological developments. Windows 11 was released on October 5th, and quite a few users had difficulty installing the software. A common obstacle was the lack of “Inicialização Segura”, also known as Secure Boot. This security feature, available for UEFI-based devices since 2012, protects against malware infection before the operating system even starts.

Technological outlook

Enabling Secure Boot does not require a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and can be done relatively easily. Users can usually quickly go through the necessary process by accessing the BIOS and changing the boot method. Uncomplicated instructions can be found online so that even the most tech-savvy among us can get a good handle on using the new features.

Whether nostalgic calendars or modern software - in Cologne and beyond it is clear that both the look into the past and the enthusiasm for the latest in technology have a place in our hearts. All the more reason to learn about local history as well as keep an eye on the latest gadgets!
