Max Lindow: Low German Festival in Bröllin with choirs and talk show!
In the tranquil village of Bröllin, a special event takes place today: Choirs from the Uckermark bring Low German songs to the best, based on texts by the local poet Max Lindow, born 150 years ago in Fahrenwalde. This event is part of the recent Low German choir, which is realized in cooperation with the NDR program "Plappermoehl". The latter is the oldest Low German talk show in the northeast and has been broadcast since 1983. The recording of the choir meeting will not only be heard on the radio, but also offers insights into the culture and history of the Low German language.
Olivia Schubert from the Max-Lindow literature society emphasizes the intrurable connection between Max Lindow and the popular program. During the event, the moderators Thomas Naedler and Christian Peplow have stimulating discussions with members of the literary society, including Dr. Annegret Lindow and Dieter Parchmann, all of whom illuminate the meaning of Lindows for the Uckermark dialect. The Uckermärkische Männchor Naugarten and the children's choir of the Brüssow rainbow school are also part of the party and will enrich the event with its performances.
a festival of the Low German language
The interest in the Low German language has been experiencing an upswing for years, not least through the Low German weeks, which took place from May 25th to June 15, 2025. These celebrations started with a Low German service in Warnemünde and included numerous events that celebrated the local culture. A highlight was the awarding of the Unkel-Bräsig Prize, who honors people who are strong for Low German. On May 31, the Low German word of 2025 was announced, which underlines the active integration of the community in the care of the language.
As part of these weeks, there were many creative program items, from folk dances to presentations of students in Low German lessons. At a special ceremony on June 13, not only was Max Lindow's 150th birthday celebrated, but also recognized the diversity of the Low German language.
education and commitment
In terms of education, the Low German language is also very important in Lower Saxony. On May 7, 2025, three schools were awarded “Low German schools”. This includes the elementary school in Emlichheim, the Egels primary school and the Marie-Elfers primary school in Carolinensiel. Around 1,700 pupils in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania actively learn Low German, and in Lower Saxony there are a total of 46 schools that strive for promoting the Low German language. These schools integrate Low German through specialist classes and projects into their curriculum. This shows how extremely important the preservation and care of this language is.The Low German weeks and the award of Low German schools are part of a larger initiative that aims to permanently anchor regional languages in the education system. The European member states have undertaken to promote minor linguistic languages, which is also the reason that such events such as the choir meeting in Bröllin make tall waves.
For all those who want to learn more about the Low German language and culture, the first broadcast of the recorded program on June 28th at 7 p.m. at NDR 1 Radio MV will be broadcast, with a repetition on July 6th at 8pm. There is also the possibility to supply yourself with further content via a podcast. The now very diverse offer shows that the Low German language is by no means forgotten and still remains alive.
