New shine for the market square in Lychen: renovation starts in 2025!
A lot is happening in Lychen! The old market square should shine in new splendor and thus create a more inviting atmosphere. Currently more of an eye-catcher for all the wrong reasons, with its cobbled floor and centrally placed town hall, that could soon change. The sadness that currently surrounds the square should give way to a lively design that not only attracts residents but also visitors. But what does this conversion actually look like?
An important decision by the city council has now given the green light. A full 75 percent of the redesign costs are funded, so Lychen can look forward to a total of 150,000 euros. 100,000 euros come from the state and federal government, and the city contributes another 50,000 euros from its budget. This is made possible by the commitment of the “Uckermärker Seenlandschaft” cooperation network, which supports social infrastructure projects, as Nordkurier reports.
Innovative design ideas
The working group, led by architect Uwe Krüger, came up with some exciting ideas. Among other things, a walk-in “mist fountain” will be installed, which is intended to offer a refreshing change. In addition, benches in the shape of the letters “L-Y-C-H-E-N” will be set up and the paving in front of the town hall will be made barrier-free. An old telephone booth becomes the center of a “book exchange center,” and additional benches, lockable garbage containers and bicycle racks round off the concept. Two pedestrian crossings have already received the necessary approval - after all, safety and access must also be a priority! If this draft is approved, the place could soon look completely different.
Despite the positive plans for the redesign, there was also resistance: the “Lychen tut gut” (LTG) faction rejected the proposal and instead pointed out the need to renovate the sports field. Nine city councilors voted for the renovation plans, while five were against, including four LTG city councilors and a representative of the AfD.
A step into the future
The implementation of the first measures is scheduled to begin this year, with 50,000 euros available for the first steps, a large part of which will be funded. The redesign is scheduled to be completed in 2026, with a further 100,000 euros, which will also come from funding, among other things.
Lychen is part of a broader development in Brandenburg, where integrated urban development policy is becoming increasingly important. This ensures that various concerns and challenges are tackled together, as Brandenburg.de explains. The goal is clear: to develop a sustainable, inclusive and vibrant city that is fit for the future.
The integrated urban development concept (INSEK) not only advances planning, but also intensifies cooperation between administration, politics and citizens. Over 80 municipalities in Brandenburg have already created such a concept. It is an important strategic planning tool that is also used in Lychen to successfully apply for funding. According to SSR Stadtentwicklung, these concepts are essential for participation in urban development funding programs.
The coming years will be crucial in creating a livable and attractive marketplace for future generations. And one thing is certain: there is an exciting project ahead of us in Lychen that is definitely worth keeping an eye on!
