A new wind on Lake Unteruckersee: Italian-German cuisine in the lakeside restaurant!

The well-known Prenzlauer Seerestaurant “Am Kap” has a new owner. CHORONA Immobilien GmbH has taken over the business from the daughters of the late landlady Kristine Hagenbeck, Klara and Henriette. The change of ownership was confirmed by Steffen Branding, CHORONA's press spokesman. Kristine Hagenbeck, who ran the restaurant for decades, died in October 2020. The restaurant, located on the picturesque Unteruckersee, was unexpectedly closed in early summer 2024, which caused a lot of conversation. However, rumors about celebrity chef Tim Mälzer's interest in the property were not confirmed. Branding described the purchase price as confidential but fair for both sides.

A new operator with experience in the catering industry will soon take over the business, and the cuisine will also change. An Italian-German menu is planned that will set both tradition and fresh accents. To ensure that the renovation goes smoothly, CHORONA will support the new landlord financially, with six-figure investments having already been promised. The facade renovation has begun and the Ucker-Lux company is taking care of the renewal of windows and doors. Contracts for the interior design and furnishing have already been signed with Prenzlauer Möbelwerke. The Seerestaurant could potentially reopen before Christmas this year.

Together for a good cause

An exciting event is planned for October 11th: a maritime flea market will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the proceeds of which will go to the Prenzlau animal protection association. There are certainly numerous opportunities for bargain hunters here, while at the same time supporting a good cause.

Trends and challenges in the catering industry

The catering industry is changing. Current trends show that sustainability and regionality are very popular. Around 51% of Germans value the origin of their food, while 45% pay attention to sustainable products. Consumer awareness is growing and catering establishments are required to adapt to these changes. Digitalization with applications such as artificial intelligence (AI) and mobile payment is revolutionizing the industry and offering new opportunities for customer service. According to Statista, 28% of service companies already use AI, and over 50% of catering companies see these technologies as relevant. Mobility in payment transactions is also becoming increasingly popular, especially among younger guests.

But there are also challenges. Food waste is a major problem that many companies want to counteract. Initiatives like “Too Good To Go” show how surplus food can be saved and offer an opportunity to contribute to a more sustainable use of resources. With over 121 million meals saved via the app in 2023, it is clear that there is a need for action here.

The redesign of the “Am Kap” restaurant could not only be a step into a new gastronomic era, but also a signal of awareness in the industry to take current trends and guests’ needs into account.
