Prenzlauer sports club shines at East German canoe championships!
The 34th East German Canoe Racing Championships took place from June 26th to 29th, 2025 on the picturesque regatta course at Beetzsee in Brandenburg an der Havel. Over 750 athletes from 56 clubs took part in the competitions, which served as qualification for the German Championships. In addition to exciting races over distances of 200 to 5000 meters, spectators also expected an exciting all-around canoe competition that put the participants' athleticism to the test. The championship was organized by the Regattateam Brandenburg Beetzsee e.V., which put together an all-round successful event with around 80 helpers. Entry was free and the competitions could be followed on site or via live stream on Facebook, as kanu-brandenburg.de reports.
The Prenzlauer Sportverein Uckermark e.V. was among the numerous participants and produced some talented canoeists. Thore Zühlsdorf and Lennox Spann competed in the K1 over 500 meters and took 6th and 8th place in the intermediate run. In the 2000 meter race, both athletes were able to hold their own in the solid midfield. A particularly positive highlight is Ole Brandt, who qualified for the final in the K1 over 500 meters and ultimately took an impressive fourth place - just 0.2 seconds away from the podium. In the K2 over 2000 meters he and Lennox Spann finished 11th out of 35 boats.
Medals and championship titles
Ole Brandt not only impressed on the water, but also showed his versatility in the canoe all-around competition: He achieved second place in the ball throw, third place in the 1000 meter run and again second place over 2000 meters in the K1. For his outstanding achievements, Ole Brandt was honored as East German champion. The board of directors of the Prenzlau sports club celebrated these successes and emphasized the importance of working with young talent.
Another of the club's hopes is Lars Tege, who has been nominated for the ECA Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint European Championships 2025 in Pitesti, Romania. Tege has already celebrated numerous national and international successes, including the title of national champion in the K2 and German champion in the K4 over 500 meters. At the German Championships in the K1 over 1000 meters he came third and fourth at the Olympic Hope Games. Lars Tege trains at the KC Potsdam federal base and attends the sports school there.
A framework for great talents
The East German Championships are not only a platform for young talent, but also an event that creates great solidarity and a great atmosphere in the region. The first competitions began on Thursday with the students' all-around canoe competition, followed by exciting races on Friday and Saturday. Many spectators enjoyed the atmosphere and saw first-hand how the region's best canoeists compete. The event was narrated by regatta announcers and offered spectators plenty of opportunities to eat and explore new equipment.
After the great success of the championships, the next challenges are already on the horizon: part of the upcoming events are the Dragon Boat World Championships from July 14th to 20th, 2025, where over 4,000 athletes from all over the world are expected. Here too, the region will once again show how much it has to offer for sport, as brandenburger-regatten.de reports.
