Uckermärkerin loses five-figure amount to internet fraudsters!
A woman from Uckermark has fallen victim to a sophisticated scam that began in a seemingly legitimate group chat. The perpetrator posed as an internationally renowned financial service provider and lured the victim with promising offers and the prospect of high returns in order to invest a five-figure sum. This reports Northern Courier.
After the woman had increasing doubts and an uneasy feeling, she began to question the situation. Eventually, she realized the deception and realized that the scammers were using false identities. To put an end to it, she filed a complaint with the police, who are now investigating the case and trying to identify the masterminds of the fraud.
Be careful when banking online
The criminal police recommend exercising a healthy degree of suspicion when it comes to tempting offers and examining providers critically. This is particularly important because, according to a dark field study by the BSI and the police, data theft and fraud are among the most common internet crimes. Over 25% of respondents have had personal experience with cybercrime, which underlines the relevance of the topic, as well BSI in its 2023 cybersecurity monitor. In addition, 65% of those surveyed fear that documents and media will be forged or manipulated.
There are currently also great concerns about artificial intelligence (AI). 60% of respondents are concerned about possible attacks by cybercriminals, while 58% believe their personal data is at risk. Shock calls that use AI-mimicked voices are particularly popular with scammers, something 52% of respondents have heard of.
