Uckermark in transition: hope and frustration in gastronomy and retail
In the picturesque Uckermark, the region's image is multi-layered and complex. According to the Nordkurier's home check, in which over 15,000 residents from the area took part, the Uckermark is described as having a beautiful landscape and warm people, but the communities are struggling with structural challenges. There is a lot of need for discussion, particularly in the catering and retail sectors, as the results of the survey underline.
The general frustration with the state of gastronomy in the region cannot be overlooked. Templin does relatively well with 6.55 points, while Randowtal (3.27) and Grünow (3.50) do not cause much enthusiasm. Many survey participants criticize the fact that they often have to travel long distances to get good food and urgently call for more vegetarian and vegan options. The opening times of the cafés and restaurants are often not sufficient, especially on weekends, which is met with incomprehension by the residents.
Retail in the Uckermark
In retail, valuations are similar and reveal a worrying picture. Cities like Templin (7.88), Angermünde (7.81) and Prenzlau (7.70) do much better in comparison, while smaller communities like Randowtal (3.30) and Uckerland (4.21) are assessed critically. The lack of shops for everyday needs in the smaller towns is complained about, as is the poor condition of many shopping streets, where shops have been closing for some time.
The economic conditions also contribute to the dissatisfaction of the population. The challenges of finding good jobs and the inadequate wages, which repeatedly lead to frustration and a lack of prospects, account for a large part of the emigration from the region. However, the survey also shows that despite all the criticism, the connection to the Uckermark is strong. Many participants express positive feelings for their homeland and would like more active support for private businesses and more leisure activities.
Statistics give food for thought
An interesting consideration is the survey’s demographics. A total of 16,664 people took part in the home check; 15,183 of these votes come from the focus region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Uckermark and Prignitz. It is noteworthy that 57 percent of the votes came from female participants. In addition, more than half of the participants are married, while almost 20 percent are in a relationship. Ratings were made on a scale of 1 to 10 in 15 different categories, with each category comprising two questions.
As nordkurier.de reports, it is clear that the Uckermark is struggling with difficulties, but can also seize an opportunity thanks to the desire for change and the great solidarity of the residents. The Uckermark is more than just a region with challenges – it is a place full of potential that needs to be developed. Further information and current topics can also be found at uckermarkmagazin.de.
