Storm warning: heavy rain is disrupting open-air concerts!

On July 21, 2025, a violent weather front caused unrest in various federal states in Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) had warned in advance of extreme rainfall in the east and northeast of the country. The regions of Saxony, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin were particularly affected. Warning levels were issued saying that in the most affected areas between Rostock and Stralsund and parts of the Baltic Sea island of Rügen there was a risk of rainfall amounts of 80 to 140 liters per square meter within up to twelve hours. These magnificent, but also worrying values can be roughly compared with the rainfall from the devastating flood disaster in the Ahr Valley, states Deutschlandfunk.

Despite all the warnings, the situation in many affected regions remained relatively calm. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, for example, the police reported no major damage or special operations. The hoped-for catastrophic events also failed to materialize in Berlin and Brandenburg; The fire brigades in Rostock did not register a single incident until 4 a.m. On the evening of July 21st, there were no significant problems in the capital and neighboring states, which certainly brought relief to some.

Concerts cancelled

Despite the relatively benign outcome of the severe weather warnings, there were some notable consequences. Open-air concerts, including Robbie Williams's in Berlin, were canceled due to unpredictable weather; the new date is scheduled to take place on Wednesday. Anna Netrebko's concert at the Gendarmenmarkt was also affected, for which an alternative date is to be announced, as Tagesschau reports.

In addition to the storms in the east, another storm in southwest Germany thwarted many people's plans. Thunderstorms raged in Mainz, flooded streets and toppled trees, which also affected rail traffic. Fortunately, there were no injuries due to a lightning strike in a residential building in Karlsruhe and the fire was quickly brought under control.

Outlook on the weather situation

The DWD forecasts indicate that showers and possibly thunderstorms are still forecast for the east and northeast of Germany. While further showers are expected in the west of the country, residents in the south of the Danube can look forward to longer sunny spells, apart from a few more rain showers.

The DWD warns urgently about floods, aquaplaning and landslides, which can occur given the expected amounts of rain. Drivers are asked to be particularly careful because the danger to life and limb should not be underestimated.

So the situation remains to be monitored. Preparations for extreme weather have already been made in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with recommendations for flood protection measures and strengthened control centers. One can only hope that the coming days bring with them less unrest than the past.
