Woidke remains SPD leader: surprises and explosive topics in Brandenburg!

Brandenburg's political landscape is under high tension: On June 21, 2025, Dietmar Woidke was re-elected state chairman with 85% of the votes at the SPD state party conference in Cottbus. The election lasted less than two hours and out of 126 delegates there were only 14 votes against and five abstentions. Woidke's support in the party is therefore obvious, even if the situation overall is complicated. The Prime Minister announced at the time of the election that he would not continue if the AfD became the strongest force. This decision increases the pressure on him and the SPD, as surveys show the AfD only slightly ahead of the SPD, which could make it more difficult to form a government in the long term. According to n-tv, his successor, Finance Minister Katrin Lange, could face enormous challenges if Woidke leaves.

In his speech, Woidke emphasized the issues of stability and security, and he called for the need for a functioning coalition. It remains to be seen how this will affect the upcoming state elections on Sunday. Citizens' concerns are also very important and are weighted differently depending on the political camp. AfD supporters have particular fears about immigration and security, while SPD and CDU voters have a strong focus on right-wing extremism. According to an analysis by tagesschau, 75% of SPD voters are disappointed with their political offer, but are voting to prevent a strong AfD.

Personal surprises and challenges

The elections for the additional state executive committee brought with them personnel surprises. Wiebke Papenbrock, who was elected with 76% of the vote, succeeds Katrin Lange, who did not stand for re-election. Kurt Fischer and Ines Hübner were also confirmed in office. What remains striking is that three prominent candidates failed in their ambitions. Nevertheless, there were successful faces in Sebastian Rüter, Melanie Balzer and Sonja Eichwede who moved into the new state board.

At the same time, political observation warns of the possible ungovernability of Brandenburg. If the AfD is successful in the elections, this could lead to a blocked government formation. The AfD has a top candidate in Hans-Christoph Berndt, whose radical left-wing connections make cooperation with other parties almost impossible. On the other hand, the Left and Greens are threatened with leaving the state parliament, while the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) could expect double-digit results, as n-tv reports.

Challenges in education and health

The election campaign themes are strongly structured around the AfD, migration and the federal government's services. Concerns about education, health care and public transportation characterized citizen complaints. A stable result for the SPD, even if the polls show the party with only 25 to 26%, would be desirable in order to effectively face the challenges in Brandenburg, especially in education - where teaching positions have been cut. Woidke's urgency to work with teachers' unions is therefore very important.

The high number of postal voting documents requested - over 17% of eligible voters - indicates a tense election atmosphere in which all parties must mobilize. Brandenburg has an exciting election ahead of it, with many uncertainties. According to the surveys, it is clear that only a few parties have a realistic chance of getting a place in the state parliament. In this tense situation, the question of a possible majority formation and future coalitions is of crucial importance for both the SPD and the CDU, as tagesschau also states.
