Germany wins bronze at the European Championships in show jumping – Belgium triumphs!
In an exciting final phase of the European Show Jumping Championships in A Coruña, the German team won bronze. This is the first team final medal for Germany since 2011 and a real cause for celebration for the equestrian community. Olympic Channel reports that the team of Christian Kukuk, Richard Vogel, Sophie Hinners and Marcus Ehning scored a total of 8.19 penalty points and thus ended up just behind the strong Belgians, who secured the title with 5.61 penalty points.
Particularly striking was the performance of Richard Vogel, who showed three clear rounds in a row with his horse United Touch and is in the lead in the individual ranking with just 0.01 penalty points. A real runner who kept the tension until the last second in the last lap. However, teammate Christian Kukuk, the Olympic champion in Tokyo, had to struggle with a clear round on the triple bars and ultimately had to accept a dramatic drop. Marcus Ehning also couldn't quite live up to his performance and fell back to 20th place after a mistake.
Competition and highlights
Anyone who thought it would be easy was quickly disappointed. When the last couples entered the arena, Belgium was already in the lead and the pressure on the German team was palpable. Nevertheless, the German riders were able to master the situation impressively. Sophie Hinners showed a flawless round and came in eleventh place. Richard Vogel was the shining hero of the day and guaranteed the positive atmosphere in the team together with national coach Otto Becker, who was visibly happy about the medal.
In the team final, both Marcus Ehning and Christian Kukuk made mistakes for the first time in the current competition. This showed that even the best riders are not immune to the pressure and expectations. “We had a good hand and the medal is a great relief for all of us,” said Becker after the competition. The British rider Scott Brash secured the silver medal for his team with a faultless round and confirmed their strength in an international comparison.
The individual final is approaching
On Sunday, the best riders of the tournament will compete in the individual final, including the top 12 who have shown performances so far. Before the two decisive rounds, which take place at 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., the eyes are now on Richard Vogel, who has the golden chance to shine in the individual. Only Marcus Ehning missed out on the individual final, which further increases the disappointment with his performance.
The coming days promise a lot of excitement, because the German team has proven in this European Championship that it is once again very popular in international show jumping. In this exciting atmosphere the best horses and riders will have to prove themselves again. We have an exciting weekend ahead of us!
