First National Veterans Day: Honor for our soldiers in North Rhine-Westphalia!
Today we are celebrating a special occasion in Germany: the first National Veterans Day, which is officially launched today, June 15, 2025. The aim of this day is to create more recognition for active and former soldiers. The Bundestag passed this resolution with a large majority in 2022, and it is being implemented today. The central event takes place at midday around the Reichstag grounds in Berlin, with other events spread across Germany, including in cities like Duisburg, where a “March of Appreciation” is planned. In total, you can benefit from over 100 events that promote respect and appreciation for our veterans. Around 10 million people did military service, of which around 500,000 soldiers were on active duty.
Henning Otte, the Bundestag's military representative, emphasizes how important this day is to draw attention to the challenges that many traumatized soldiers struggle with. In particular, attention is drawn to the increased support and appreciation that both active and former soldiers deserve. Former soldiers, such as Staff Sergeant Stephan, report a remarkable change in the perception of veterans over the years. While he was often confronted with shame and disinterest after his return from Somalia 30 years ago, today he experiences a growing interest and greater appreciation for the experiences of veterans, including in everyday life.
On the way to more recognition
But there are also critical voices. Some veterans are demanding more than just symbolic gestures from politicians. Robert, for example, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, sees the day rather skeptically and one can only hope that the federal government will consider concrete help for veterans. Lieutenant Colonel Michael Krause, who heads the veterans office in Berlin, explains that this office does everything it can to support former soldiers with bureaucratic issues. Here too, the implementation of the Bundestag’s resolutions agreed in 2022 is important.
However, parallel to the celebrations, there are also dark clouds over Germany. In North Rhine-Westphalia, violent thunderstorms caused many problems: over 11,000 ground lightning strikes were counted, and in Bad Wünnenberg more than 50 liters of rain fell per square meter. This led to street flooding and numerous full cellars. There was also a serious accident on the A2 motorway due to the heavy rain, and further thunderstorms are expected today.
Veterans in Germany: A look at the events
Other topics that concern Germany: the escalated situation in the Middle East, the G7 summit in Canada and the latest developments surrounding African swine fever. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the virus was detected in a dead wild boar in Kirchhundem. Although the disease is harmless to humans and many animals, it poses a significant threat to pig farming.
Apart from that, the culture in North Rhine-Westphalia is also lively. An exciting James Bond exhibition in Wattenscheid opened its doors today, which not only features exhibits such as James Bond's birth certificate, but also offers many other highlights for those interested. The exhibition has free entry and runs for several weeks - a must for fans!
In conclusion, National Veterans Day in Germany represents both a celebration and a call to society to do more for the people who stand for peace and freedom. The dialogue has been opened - one can only hope that it does not remain just symbolic.
