Gass storage in Germany: Current level and winter prevention!
The gas storage in Germany currently shows a level of 50.66 %, which means a slight increase of 0.32 % compared to the previous day. These current values were charged at 6:00 a.m. on July 2, 2025. Compared to the last few months, the level has risen pleasantly after it was only 28.83 % at the end of April. In recent years, however, there have also been times when the memory was almost full - for example in November 2023, when a level of over 100 % was achieved, which was made possible by factors such as temperature and pressure, such as Allgäuer Zeitung reported.
But what is the meaning of the gas storage for gas supply in Germany? The level is crucial to ensure gas supply during cold winter months. According to [ZDF] (https://www.zdfheute.de/wirtschaft/gasversorgung-energiesicherheit-Deutschland-pipelines-russland-100.html), Germany can survive about two average winter months with fully filled savings. This is particularly important because the gas deliveries from Russia declined sharply. Since the closure of the north stream 1 pipeline, little gas has been flowing from Russia to Germany, while Norway has established itself as the new main supplier.
sustainable gas supply
In order to close the gaps in the supply caused by the decline in Russian gas deliveries, Germany has adapted its strategy. Since 2023, several new liquid gas minals in northern Germany can help fill the gas stores. In addition, the levels of filling are legally defined: on September 1st, the memory must have reached at least 75 % and 95 % on November 1st. These goals have recently been fulfilled in a counterproductive manner, which speaks for a stable supply, as the DVGW emphasizes.
A closer look at the gas consumption figures shows that Germany used a total of around 844 Terawatt hours of gas in 2024, which represents an increase of 3.5 % compared to 2023. Interestingly, 39 % of this consumption went back to households and businesses, while this was 61 % for industry. The consumption in July and August was always the lowest, while the cold winter months had the highest gas consumption.
protection and emergency plans
In the event of a gas deficiency, the Federal Government has emergency plans in the hindquarters. Protected customers such as households, schools and hospitals would receive priority in gas supply in such a crisis. This shows how important it is to regularly monitor the filling levels of the gas storage. The daily and weekly data for gas supply are provided and taken into account by the responsible authorities in order to be able to react quickly if necessary.
With a view to the coming months, it remains to be seen how the filling levels develop and whether the memory can withstand the critical requirements again. Despite the challenges that the decline in gas deliveries from Russia brings, Germany is currently on a stable course. The continuity of the care is a central goal that is to continue to be secured by the level -headed strategies and flexible adjustments.
