Gas storage in Germany: Current filling level and winter precautions!

The gas storage facilities in Germany currently show a fill level of 50.66%, which means a slight increase of 0.32% compared to the previous day. These current values ​​were collected at 6:00 a.m. on July 2, 2025. Compared to the last few months, the filling level has increased positively, after being only 28.83% at the end of April. However, in recent years there have also been times when the storage tanks were almost full - for example in November 2023, when a filling level of over 100% was reached, which was made possible by factors such as temperature and pressure, such as Allgäuer Newspaper reports.

But what significance do gas storage facilities have for the gas supply in Germany? The filling level is crucial to ensure gas supply during cold winter months. According to ZDF, Germany can survive around two average winter months with fully filled storage facilities. This is particularly important since gas supplies from Russia have fallen sharply. Since the closure of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, little gas has flowed from Russia to Germany, while Norway has established itself as the new main supplier.

Sustainable gas supply

In order to close the supply gaps caused by the decline in Russian gas deliveries, Germany has adjusted its strategy. Since 2023, several new liquid gas terminals in northern Germany have been able to help fill gas storage facilities. In addition, the filling level requirements are set by law: the storage tanks must have reached at least 75% by September 1st and even 95% by November 1st. These goals have recently been met counterproductively prematurely, which speaks for a stable supply, as the DVGW emphasizes.

A closer look at the gas consumption figures shows that Germany consumed a total of around 844 terawatt hours of gas in 2024, which represents an increase of 3.5% compared to 2023. Interestingly, households and businesses accounted for 39% of this consumption, while industry accounted for 61%. Consumption was always lowest in July and August, while the cold winter months had the highest gas consumption.

Protection and emergency plans

The federal government has emergency plans in place in the event of a gas shortage. Protected customers such as households, schools and hospitals would receive priority for gas supply in such a crisis. This shows how important it is to regularly monitor the gas storage levels. Daily and weekly data on gas supply is provided and taken into account by the responsible authorities in order to be able to react quickly if necessary.

Looking ahead to the coming months, it remains to be seen how the filling levels will develop and whether the storage facilities will be able to withstand the critical requirements again. Germany is currently on a stable course despite the challenges posed by the decline in gas deliveries from Russia. The continuity of care is a central goal that should continue to be secured through prudent strategies and flexible adjustments.
