Current filling levels of the gas storage facilities in Germany on June 26, 2025: Stability, consumption and trends at a glance.

Gas storage in Germany: filling level rises to 48.82 percent!
There is currently pleasing stability in the gas supply in Germany. On June 26, 2025, the gas storage capacity was 48.82 percent. This is 0.32 percent more than the previous day, signaling a positive trend, especially given the previous gas consumption of 844 terawatt hours in 2024, which increased by 3.5 percent compared to 2023. Gas demand in German households and businesses accounts for around 39 percent, while industry accounts for the majority of consumption at 61 percent. These figures come from current surveys by the Allgäuer Zeitung.
Based on the filling levels of the gas storage facilities, it is clear that the supply situation has stabilized overall. The filling levels have fluctuated greatly in recent months - from just 32.62 percent at the beginning of May to 39.65 percent on June 1st to the current 48.82 percent. This data shows that under optimal conditions, storage can reach over 100 percent of its capacity when gas is compressed and cooled. According to DVGW, the German association of the gas and water industry, underground gas storage is an essential reinsurance for the energy supply in the cold winter months.
Protection against gas shortage
Intense discussions about gas shortages arose in the context of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Germany has therefore noticeably reduced its dependence on Russian gas. Russia now plays only a marginal role as a gas supplier, while Norway is now the main source of natural gas supplies. New LNG terminals in northern Germany also help to fill the gas storage facilities in order to be prepared for possible bottlenecks, as ZDF reports.
In accordance with legal requirements, the gas storage facilities must achieve important filling targets: 75 percent by September 1st, 85 percent by October 1st and 95 percent by November 1st. So far, Germany has reached all of these level targets ahead of schedule, reflecting the goal of ensuring winter supplies. According to the experts at DVGW, the actual filling level of the storage facilities and their retrieval in winter are also crucial for supply requirements.
The forecast for the coming winter months
Natural gas storage is not just important for winter. They can cover Germany's entire gas needs for around two cold winter months. Current trends show that gas consumption has fallen by 14 percent compared to 2018 to 2021, and with maximum consumption in January and February, demand of 243 terawatt hours has been recorded in recent years. This means that the signs point to relaxation, as long as the storage tanks remain filled accordingly.
Overall, Germany has done well to adapt to the changed geopolitical situation and ensure a stable gas supply even in an uncertain environment. The development of filling levels and the strategic measures to secure gas supplies could be crucial for the coming period. With a further increase in storage capacities and a diversified import mix, we will be able to master the challenges and actively advance the energy transition.
