Gas storage in Germany: filling level rises to 65.04% - what now?

What will the gas supply in Germany do in August 2025? A recent view of gas storage shows that the level on August 13th is at 65.04%, a slight increase of 0.36% compared to the previous day. This information comes from the Allgäuer Zeitung, which also documented the monthly changes. If you compare this value with the last few months, a steady increase can be seen: on August 1st the filling level was 60.55%, while in May it was only 32.62%. This suggests that the situation in the storage infrastructure is gradually improving.

NDR informs that the gas storage facilities hold a total of around 250 terawatt hours and that gas consumption in Germany is expected to reach almost 850 terawatt hours in 2024. This means that gas requirements are mainly covered in winter. It should be noted that consumption is highest annually in the cold season, especially in December and January.

Stability and challenges in gas supply

The supply situation in Germany is currently considered stable. At full capacity, the gas storage facilities can cover demand for around two average winter months. According to ZDF, the storage facilities have been well filled in recent winters and the fill level targets have been regularly reached. For example, for September 1st the target is 75%. However, it should be noted that the current level is approximately 9 percentage points below the 2017 to 2021 average. One reason for this is the colder winter and a high proportion of consumers in the industry.

Gas consumption increased by 3.5% in 2024 compared to the previous year. In addition, gas imports to Germany are heavily influenced by imports from Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium, as gas deliveries from Russia have been significantly reduced. The federal government has taken measures to prevent Germany from remaining too dependent on Russian gas. LNG terminals, which have been in operation since 2023, play an essential role.

Legal requirements and the future of gas supply

The Federal Ministry has set clear legal requirements for the filling levels of gas storage facilities. A filling level of 85% should be reached by October 1st. All of these precautions are part of a comprehensive plan to secure gas supplies for the coming years and to rely more heavily on renewable energies in the future. By 2030, 80% of Germany's electricity should come from such sources.

In summary, it can be said that the German gas supply is overall stable despite challenges such as persistently high prices and climatic conditions. The progress in gas storage levels shows that Germany is willing to secure its energy supply and reduce its dependence on a few sources. The next few months will be crucial in achieving the set targets and ensuring gas supplies for citizens.
