Air conditioning boom in Germany: production and imports at record levels!

In Germany, the demand for air conditioning systems is constantly increasing. The Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden has confirmed that production increased by an impressive 92% to 317,000 devices last year. Many local businesses have probably shown a good hand here! However, compared to the European countries bordering the Mediterranean, the number of air conditioning systems in German buildings remains low, which shows that there is still a lot of potential here.

A look at the numbers makes it clear that the demand for air conditioning units has skyrocketed in the last five years. From 181,000 devices in 2019, production increased by 75.1% to around 317,000 devices in 2024, according to a report by regionalheute.de. During the same period, production value increased to 1.5 billion euros – the highest level in the last five years. The import value of air conditioning units rose by 48% to 949 million euros.

Imports and main suppliers

The most important supplier countries for air conditioning systems in Germany in 2024 were Italy, which accounted for 25% of imports, followed by China with 13.7% and Sweden with 10.4%. What is particularly striking is that in 2023 the value of imports reached its peak at 957 million euros. However, the 2.8% decline in exports to 713 million euros shows that Germany is not at the top of the market here.

Future outlook

The forecasts for the German air conditioning market are promising. According to Statista, sales in 2025 are estimated at around 300 million euros - and annual sales growth could be 7.2% by 2030. In 2030 the market volume could reach 426 million euros.

As temperatures have risen, the demand for energy-efficient air conditioning systems is increasing. Environmental awareness and changing consumer behavior are also driving this trend forward. The willingness to buy is not only related to the consumption of air conditioning systems. An average turnover of around 7.16 euros is expected per household in 2025.

So, all in all, you could say that German consumers are slowly but surely getting used to the comfort of air conditioning. The air conditioning business shows that a cool breeze is more than just a luxury these days - it seems to be becoming a necessity.

So let's remember that we live in a changing climate: Air conditioning is no longer just for sweaters in holiday regions, but could soon be in every household in this country too!
