Deer accident near Zingst: Warning of accidents involving wild animals!
A tragic incident occurred this morning on State Road 21 near Zingst when a deer was hit by two oncoming cars. Fortunately, the two drivers were unharmed, but the deer did not survive the collision. The vehicles suffered significant damage amounting to around 30,000 euros, and one of the cars even had to be towed away. Such incidents are not uncommon in the region, as in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania a wildlife accident is recorded approximately every 30 minutes, as NDR reports.
The police urge people to be particularly careful, especially in the early morning and evening hours when wild animals are particularly active. Last week, the police recorded every second traffic accident in the Ludwigslust-Parchim region alone as a wildlife accident. This is alarming and should lead to a rethink among drivers.
Increasing number of wildlife accidents in autumn
In autumn, wildlife activity reaches its peak, which dramatically increases the risk of wildlife accidents. This time of year not only brings with it increased animal mobility, but also factors such as the deer's mating season and the change in behavior due to the time change. The police authorities note that particular caution is required, especially at dusk, because the darkness poses an additional danger.
Statistics from last year show that a total of 17,129 accidents involving wildlife were registered in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A look at the distribution shows that the numbers fluctuate in the individual police stations:
| Police inspection | Wildlife accidents 2024 |
|---|---|
| Schwerin | 129 |
| Wismar | 1,988 |
| Ludwigslust | 3,426 |
| Rostock | 186 |
| Guestrow | 2,734 |
| Stralsund | 2,763 |
| Neubrandenburg | 3,311 |
| Anklam | 2,592 |
Prevention measures and tips
In order to reduce the number of accidents involving wildlife, large warning signs will be erected on particularly vulnerable routes in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district from October 2025. Those affected include the B321 between Sudenhof and Bandenitz and the B192 between Goldberg and Neu Poserin. In addition, increased speed controls should be carried out on these routes.
The police recommend that drivers reduce their speed near forests and fields and always be ready to brake. You should also pay attention to game crossing signs as they often indicate dangerous areas.
Last year, motor vehicle insurers in Germany had to pay around 1.1 billion euros for damage caused by wild animals. With an average damage amount of around 4,100 euros per accident, this represents an additional financial risk for many drivers.
