More and more children in MV: parents overwhelmed, protective measures increasing!

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the call for help is becoming louder and louder: the number of child welfare threats and the associated admissions into care are increasing rapidly. This was reported by NDR, which highlighted the worrying situation in the state. There is a clear trend, particularly in Schwerin, where more than two children are now being taken away from their families every week. The main reason for this worrying development is the increasing overwhelm of many parents.

The NDR report speaks of over 6,500 cases processed by the crisis service last year. Children seeking protection often come with frightening backgrounds. According to AWO leader Doreen Graack, violence, drug abuse and neglect are common problems that leave parents lacking “strength and structure”. This makes it difficult for many to cope with their responsibilities.

Increasing number of cases throughout Germany

But the problem is not just limited to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Across Germany, current statistics also show that around 69,500 children and young people were accommodated in youth welfare offices in 2024. This corresponds to a decrease of 5,100 cases compared to the previous year, which is not encouraging, however, as cases of child endangerment have increased by 10 percent, as Tagesschau reports. These carefully recorded figures show that acute risks now account for around 42 percent of all admissions.

It is also particularly noticeable that unaccompanied entries into Germany continue to be at the top of the reasons for protective measures, even if the numbers here have fallen. In 2024, 44 percent of those taken into care were due to unaccompanied entry, while 42 percent were due to urgent threats to the child's well-being and 13 percent were due to self-reports by the young people themselves, according to statistical data from destatis.

Alarming trends in child protection

The most common reasons for protective measures include excessive demands on parents (25%), neglect (12%) and physical abuse (11%). These acute problems are serious, and so last year in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania more than 1,000 reports of danger were registered with the youth welfare office, which signals a clear upward trend.

Around 1,000 reports were recorded in the Mecklenburg Lake District, which corresponds to 44 interventions by the youth welfare office. Reports have also increased due to the increased commitment of police, teachers and neighbors who are alerting people to problems early on.

Despite the growing need for support, offers of help such as parent training and support from social workers often remain unused. It seems paradoxical that at a time when cries for help are getting louder, many parents do not seek help. The increase in reports and admissions clearly shows that there is a need for action.

The situation is alarming and calls for a rethink on the part of both the authorities and society. At the recent child and youth protection conference in Rostock, the need to provide better support to those affected and to implement stronger preventative measures was urgently highlighted.

The challenges facing socially disadvantaged families in Germany are diverse and require a joint approach from specialists, politicians and the community. Only through good cooperation can the existing problems be addressed sustainably.
